Nick Matthews

Said the following about Sue Millington:

“Over CP5 IP Track need to make savings of around £1,100 Million Pounds in order to meet government spending targets. In order to make up these savings IP Track has formulated a 10 point plan that accounts for £600 Million of the savings that need to be made.

Sue Millington is the Programme Manager who heads up the small IP Track Innovation Team consisting of 4 project manager and 3 engineers and is responsible for 70% of the savings that have been identified in the 10 point plan. These items include the following.

• Induction Welding (consumption free welding for S&C)

• Rila (Train borne survey)

• Track Bed stabilisation

• Under Sleeper Pads

Under Sues command the team has actively identified or developed from the drawing board numerous innovations that have been proven to help IP Track and the wider industry save time, cost, improve workforce Safety and increase the quality of the track constructed. Sue is well on the way to making the £420 million pounds saving she is responsible for in CP5.

An example of an improvement is safety is Rila train borne survey that eliminates the need for survey teams to have boots on the ground. Track survey is best done in day light and this requires survey teams to work Red Zone (trains running). Rila also can survey to 1mm accuracy at whatever the train speed is. The savings are huge.

As proof of the level of innovation that Sues team has achieved this the last 18 months , Sue has applied for 3 patents and has had 2 registered by the UK Intellectual property Office for her teams work.

Sue also believes strongly her team should do what they can to support charity. Over the last 12 months Sue’s team has raised over £110,000 for Clic Sargent, Saint Johns Ambulance and The Railway children. The team has organised rail shows, run marathons and cycled across the Brecon Beacons. As well as fund raising the team under Sue’s guidance are going to landscape the garden at Clic Sargents residential home in Oxford so that children and their families undergoing cancer treatment at the John Radcliff Hospital can stay in a homely environment.

Sue is an exceptional Programme and Project manager and I much loved and respected by her team.“
