We have chosen to nominate Steve for this award because of his enthusiasm for every project that he works on and in particular his devotion to our Auto-Engine Stop Start technology programme.
Steve led the team that made DB Schenker Rail UK the first rail freight operator in Great Britain to introduce Stop Start Technology to 90 of its Class 66 locomotives in 2015, with the remaining 84 being fitted before the end of 2016.
As Project Manager he implemented and organised each stage of the project, including the initial trials of the technology in Cornwall.
Throughout the programme Steve worked closely with the team to overcome any challenges which arose. This included leading the group as they modified the Auto-Engine Stop Start system to make it fully compliant for the UK. Steve also ensured that the technology was compatible with early and later Class 66 models so it could be installed efficiently and without delay.
Based on the results of the trials and the benefits that have been observed so far, the installation of the technology will equate to an estimated energy saving of 8,700 tonnes of CO2 each year, reducing the organisations’ emissions from diesel locomotives by a further 3.8%.
Without Steve, these benefits may not ever have been realised, as he developed the initial concept of fitting DB Schenker Rail UK locomotives and garnered the support and funds needed for the project to go ahead.
His efforts have improved DB Schenker Rail UK’s eco-performance, as well as increasing reliability for our customers and generating financial benefits.
Most importantly Steve ensured that the team behind the project felt incredibly proud of the results they achieved and their dedication was recognised at every stage. Steve even said that if he were to be short-listed for this award it would recognise the team’s achievements and be in honour of them all.“
