Said the following about Stephen Green:

“In August 2014 the stations team at Northern Rail reorganised its management team seeing the introduction of a Station Compliance Team. This was a totally new concept reporting directly to the Head of Stations. Stephen Green was appointed into the role of Station Compliance Delivery Manager and works together with his team to provide leadership and support for the management team in relation to Health and Safety. Northern Rail has 464 stations across the North of England and Stephen has the responsibility of all the operational and occupational processes and procedures within the stations team. He works closely with our Safety and Assurance Team to ensure that the stations team comply with all the requirements and embed the safety procedures robustly.

Stephen leads the station compliance team which consists of two Station Safety Compliance Managers who are responsible for the operational assessments for dispatch and gate line management. Stephen also has four Station Managers who have direct responsibility of 321 unstaffed stations. Stephen’s team also manage all the rostering requirements for the entire station and retail teams consisting of 900 employees.

Stephen’s main function of his role is to implement processes to deliver compliance at all of our locations ensuring operational and occupational standards are achieved. He provides a strategic overview of all key procedures to ensure compliance with legislation and does this in a way that makes it simple and easy to understand for the team. His style and approach of working generates assurances within the business that builds confidence at all levels that whatever he has designed and implemented will be of an extremely high standard. His ability to breakdown the technical elements of procedures into simple and basic awareness is a skill that not everyone has yet Stephen thrives in this environment and always works through problems with a positive approach.

Since being promoted into this role, Stephen has excelled in all aspects. Stephen has really made the job his own delivering above and beyond meeting all criteria of his job description whilst leading his new team of six managers and five clerical roles to create a united approach in safety compliance, unstaffed station management and rostering across the whole of the Northern Network.

One part of Stephen’s role requires him to work closely with local Stakeholders creating a harmonious joined up approach to the up keep of our unstaffed stations and the customer experience in general.

The leadership that Stephen demonstrates alongside his wealth of knowledge and with the direction he provides the entire team is conducted unconditionally. His management team is running smoothly in their new roles, refreshed on the aims of achieving Northern’s philosophy of running “A Railway the North can be proud of”.

Years of dedication in an array of different roles has built Stephen an unchallengeable, unique reputation brimming with respect from a vast selection of grades across the network so, it’s no surprise to learn that the relationship he has created with the Safety and Assurance Team working is a relationship built on trust and experience.

Stephen is a very driven, focused and trustworthy individual who is completely passionate about delivering the best he possibly can in order to contribute to creating and delivering the best possible customer experience. Every task is completed with a keen eye for detail, extensive knowledge and timely delivery which constantly provides results that benefit the business. Much of Stephen’s work is so precise and informative that many things are shared amongst his peers for them to use as best practice. Stephen displays strong personable behaviours and great leadership skills amongst his peers and directs his staff clearly and concisely whilst maintaining his approachable image.

Aside to leading this compliance team Stephen was instrumental in the delivery of the major redevelopment of Manchester Victoria, he was given this as a specific project as the primary lead for Northern in relation to the delivery of the new roof, concourse environment and automatic ticket gates. This was a significant project which Stephen excelled in and worked closely with Network Rail to ensure that the transition of all station works were conducted to the standard required and communicated continuously throughout the project with numerous stakeholders. His opened minded thinking towards business critical decision making, safety and enhancing the customer experience is a credit to both himself and the way the scheme progressed. He is a true ambassador for Northern and a valuable asset to my team. Recognition from this award would really blow Stephen away as he is such a modest and generous character.“
