“On 13 June 2017, I stepped off my train at Sheffield to find a teenager in floods of tears having missed her train to Penistone where she was due to sit a GCSE exam.
I took her to see the Station Manager to see what they could do to help. He checked with Northern (who ran the train she had missed) but they advised that this was not something they could/would help with. Despite this initial response, the station team helped to organise a taxi anyway (on their account as she had no money) and I escorted Ellie to the station foyer where another member of the station team was waiting to meet her and ensure that she got the right taxi.
This action has probably changed the course of this young girl's life and may have avoided a situation like we had a Meadowhall a few weeks earlier where a teenager died.
The following day I checked with station staff and was advised that the manager on duty that day was Dave Burgess, however this nomination is not just for Dave but for every member of his team that helped out that day. You are all heroes.
