Nominations for Safety Person or Team Award

Mohammed Al-Sharif

Said the following about Safwaan Ali:

“Safwaan is the Operational Lead for VolkerFitzpatrick on all structures related delivery for the Camp Hill Line stations project in Birmingham. Safwaan has driven a culture of safety on the project and across the business, engaging the client WMCA, Network Rail, designers and subcontractors to adopt the same focus and culture of 'safety first always'. Safwaan was the key member of the project team who organised the emergency rescue response when a vulnerable young man was walking on the live railway track at the Kings Heath station during live operational hours; Safwaans quick thinking and calm demeanour helped bring the team together to contact the signaller, access track safely and bring the young man to safety and returned to re-unite with his mother and loved ones. Safwaan took a backstep when the business was providing their thanks to the team for this amazing rescue effort, as he is an extremely humble and hard working individual who cares about people genuinely and is an ambassador for VolkerFitzpatrick.

Safwaan has a robust attitude and approach to reviewing safety documents such as risk assessments, method statements, task briefs, ALO plans, temporary works and permanent works designs, and always speaks up to highlight safety concerns and provides sensible, efficient and cost effective solutions to problems that he identifies on site and in designs. Safwaan has a fun and gentle character and puts people at ease, whilst addressing sensitive matters on health and safety that typically can put people on edge. He is a true ambassador for safety in the railway sector and will no doubt continue to develop and foster a culture of safety first always.“
