Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

James Mackintosh

Said the following about Peter Wong:

“Peter joined the Railway Electrification and Power Engineering team in August 2015 having moved from Hong Kong. For the past year Peter has been working on the Option Selection and Outline Designs for the Old Oak Common Decommissioning Project which see's a 4 stage decommissioning of the depot and staged design to ensure continued operation of the depot. The decommissioning is of strategic importance to enable the HS2 works to progress in the area.

This nomination is not only for Peter's technical development, gains in knowledge and dedication over the past year, but also his ability to discuss in depth technical solutions with Clients, Designers and Installation Contractor in his second language.

The most noticeable trait that Peter has is his ability to relay important information early. An example of this is the shore supplies for the depots. The project has challenging deadlines and rather than keep his head down, Peter realised that the shore supply transformer would be a long lead item and advised the installation contractor early in the project. This forward thinking is critical on projects like this to avoid programme delay and onward delay costs.

When Peter Joined in August 2015 I gave him a Signalling Power Design to undertake for the Western Tranche 1 Project. This was Peter's first Signalling Power design which used an isolated terra (IT) earthing system, distributed at 650V. Peter systematically researched the system and standards and provided me with a design that needed few corrections. This demonstrates that Peter can adapt to new challenges and recognised the importance of BS, IEC and Railway Standards along with compliance with legislation.

In conclusion, I believe Peter should be nominated for Rail Engineer of the year as he has demonstrated time and time again that he is able to review challenges, present solutions and discuss these solutions with people at all levels.“
