The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Martin Hayes

Said the following about Paddington PWAY Teams:

“The past 18 months have been a challenging time for Paddington PWAY, with three section managers and numerous changes regarding staff and work loads the 2 maintenance and patrolling team have excelled during this difficult time. In the last 6 months Reading DU and the Western route for NWR have seen a 80% increase in delivered works. This includes over 9 switch and crossing units being delivered and many more brought out onto various sites, this work is upgrade works for Cross Rail in order to reduce failures on critical assets. This work has been delivered by Team Leaders and technicians who only 7 months ago were not comfortable with taking on this work load.

The team is a valuable asset to Reading DU and would be sought after through the country by various maintainers. During all this they have also managed and ensured safety of the line during the hot weather periods where Paddington had a huge number of CRT sites. The team are now used as role models for best practice and lead the way with delivering work efficiently and safely. The hours put in by the supervisors planners and track team are a credit to the railway and Network Rail.“

Michael Lungo

“Paddington Pway (maintance, patrol, office, planning team)have come a long way in the last 8 months. With multiple crt sites and multiple S&C units installed the team has managed this from top to bottom. With Paddington being one of the largest stations in the country and with very short possession times the teams are managing to get the work done handing possessions back on time and safe.“

Rachel McDonnell

Said the following about Paddington PWAY Teams:

“I have nominated Paddington Permanent way for being a hardworking and dedicated gang who constantly go above and beyond in there line of work.

In my 2 years of working with them I have always been impressed with their drive to get the job done, their ability to be calm and collected under pressure and over all there attitude towards the job.

One of the best examples of this would be:

‘During a Saturday night shift a stressing kit broke during the job, instead of installing the rail and issue a pink form a member of the team drove to the nearest depot and borrowed a seconded kit.

Once the job was completed they then drove back and replaced it adding time on to the end of there shift.’

This act not only saved an un-necessary hot weather site but also ensured that a job could be completed correctly the first time around without the need to replan.

This is just a small example of the work that is under taken every day by this team of hard working individuals, for this reason and many others I have decided to nominate them for this award, in the hope that they are recognised and praised for their efforts.“
