Ian Thomas

Said the following about Nicholas Allan:

“Nicholas or Lofty as he is affectionately known has been a well-liked member of the Train Service Management Team in the Kent Integrated Control Centre for a number of you. I can remember being a conductor nearly 20 years ago when telephoning the control centre was seen as an unusual and big thing. It always felt reassuring when Lofty was on duty, you could talk to him, he knew so much about the railway that you just had to explain the situation and he knew what the problems were and how to get around them. I can even remember a few situations where he helped, which I probably wouldn't have done with anyone else.

I have been lucky enough in the last year to move from depot management into the KICC and have finally put a face to the voice on the end of the phone having now worked alongside him.

We have just had the news that after 50 years on the railway, he will be retiring and he will be missed!“

Christopher Horn

Said the following about Nicholas Allan:

“What can we say about Nick AKA Lofty? He has given over fifty years to the railway. In a career that has seen many, many changes to the railway, and its workings.

Lofty's knowledge and skills will be dearly missed. With an encyclopedic understanding of the routes and services, he was always keen to ensure that those who needed help and guidance were given such freely.

Lofty not only worked tirelessly for the railway but in his spare time volunteered as a local magistrate, often giving guidance to those who had fallen on hard times, and volunteering at Rochester cathedral playing the organ.

If there was ever a film made about a railwayman, then Lofty's life would be an excellent script.“
