The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Award for Charity

Lynn Crump

Said the following about Neil Lathom:

“Despite suffering a heart attack in 2020, Neil has raised over £10,000 for various charities by taking part in a number of fundraising events including half marathons, 100km bike rides, Iron Man, Decathlons and even a boxing match.

In 2022, Neil’s fantastic work for charity was recognised by the Railway Benefit Fund (RBF) when he was awarded the Rail Hero award at their annual Heart of Gold Awards. Sadly, Neil was unable to attend the award ceremony as he had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkinson Lymphoma earlier that year and was undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Thankfully, Neil is now cancer-free and back at work and was able to receive his belated award from RBF President, Peter Waterman OBE and Freightliner CEO, Tim Shoveller at a special event at Freightliner’s Southampton terminal.

Neil is passionate about supporting people suffering with cancer and, now that he is feeling stronger, has signed up to take part in the grueling Great South Run in October to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. So, his great work for charity continues!

Neil is also a great advocate for wellbeing and mental health and recently shared his personal story on the support he received following his cancer diagnosis in Freightliner’s staff magazine.

Neil's tremendous achievements for charity deserve to be acknowledged. Neil is very modest and doesn’t really see himself as the person we all see, which makes him even more special. Anyone in his company from the staff on the ground to the CEO could not fail to see what a great asset he is to the company and to his colleague’s lives. He is thoroughly deserving of a RailStaff Award.“
