Mohammed is a testament to the civil engineering industry in which he has already offered so much and will no doubt continue to do so in coming years.“

“Mohammed has shown extreme diligence in his understanding and application of engineering. He is well acquainted and has demonstrated good understanding in technical principles and the basis of engineering. As well as his knowledge of relevant standards/ legislation. He has a key safety focus and this has been demonstrated through his role as CEM where he has had to make hard decisions and safety based decisions with the safety of the public, operational railway and his staff in mind.

Mohammed has also been offering me informal mentoring support and coaching through my ICE development and general career advice. This has been going on since I first met him (a masters student) during my first year of university. For the last 10 years he has been a good role model and influence on me to develop my own career within the rail sector. I have also seen him lend a helping hand to anyone who has asked and has gone out of his way to help others achieve their chartership/ develop their own career through means of advising them on potential options to consider/ even helping with providing technical advice to colleagues/ friends/ people who have asked him to help them in boosting their understanding of technical issues/ challenges.

Mohammed has also been nominated by myself for the YRP award, which he achieved and I believe he has worked hard and should be put forward for rail engineer of the year.“

Furthermore he puts the same effort into helping other do this also by mentoring several other peers in the industry both within Volker Fitzpatrick and externally. He is an asset to the company and an crucial member of my team.

Please see attached where Mohammed came into work on a critical railway blockade even though I had not rota' d him in and as the senior engineering manager got stuck in and helped the subcontractor labour team install a UTX.“

He regularly sets up meals (networking events) after work and brings together railway professionals from various stages of their careers, listening to any concerns they have and offering support with professional development. He never shys away from sharing his experience.“

He continues to ensure that all team members work together and communicate effectively. The Camp Hill stations project is a prime example, where clear, consistent collaboration is essential in completing the project on time and within budget. His attention to detail, process driven methods and keen desire to deliver quality work in a collaborative environment was 2nd to none. As Contractors Engineering Manager on the Project under NR ASPRO scheme, his dedication to the role and the engineering team was the driving force for the successful installation and delivery of platform front walls, drainage, complex soil nailing activities, piling works, demolition of existing structures, and vital S&T upgrades all within a tricky rail environment, working under Seperated, Fenced and Safeguarded SSoW. Alongside his technical capacity, he utilised his open, friendly and honest approach to managing key stakeholders on the project including the client, West Midlands Combined Authority, and infrastructure owners Network Rail and their expansive team of colleagues and staff. His hard work has been recognised and he has received the award as the most collaborative person in the West Midlands Rail Programme in 2023 from West Midlands Rail Executive due to the ability to bring together Network Rail, WMCA, Mott MacDonald and site construction staff into one joint team effort with a culture of openness and trust.

Additionally, since receiving CEng MICE recognition Al-Sharif has taken up a role as a mentor and to support others to pursue their path towards professional qualifications including charted engineer status with ICE and other organisations like IStructE. For his effort he has been received the 2024 Mentor of the Year award from the Young Rail Professionals.“
