Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Jeremy Gardner

Said the following about Mihai Solomon:

“Mihai joining AECOM February 2014 as a graduate he has shown himself to be a dedicated and excellent engineer. He has already established himself as a very competent designer of station structures and is now leading design teams and mentoring younger engineers. On top of his excellent technical capabilities, he has strong organisational and management skills and is a very good communicator.

Learning on his first job, Finchley Road and Frognal Station renewal, Mihai developed his engineering capabilities. He put in long hours to meet challenging deadlines and demonstrated his commitment to deliver a successful project.

Mihai was a major contributor to the route selection work on the north of England to Scotland route studies for HS2. On this project he demonstrated high levels of competence, commitment, collaboration, flexibility and excellence.

Mihai worked on the development of proposals for the capacity upgrade of the Custom House Station on the DLR. This client was TfL and the task was to take a feasibility proposal for the scheme to a RIBA 3 stage design ready to go to tender. In his role as design engineer for this project he came up with the alternative to the original proposals which was adopted for the scheme. This proposal significantly reduced the capital cost of the scheme and made the scheme more constructible by avoiding a structure that spanned the tracks.

Since then, he has successfully put together a design and build tender for the upgrade of the same station on the DLR with the contractor. On winning the project, Mihai has been the lead engineer for the work managing the team to deliver the designs in a challenging timescale, fit for construction in a confined environment.

Recently Mihai has worked on the Wessex Capacity Programme, delivering the designs for the extensions of Platforms 1 – 4 at Waterloo Station. He was instrumental in designing the solution using precast panels that could be assembled during the 3 week partial closure of the station. This work has just been completed successfully on time with the platform works substantially completed on the first 10 days.

At the same time as delivering well engineered design solutions to challenging problems for AECOM, Mihai has successfully taken a part-time MSc in Structural Engineering.

Mihai is also excellent on selecting and making design software packages work with our CAD suits and in now a BIM champion within AECOM.

Mihai is still in the early part of his career but is already taking overall responsibility for delivering technically challenging projects and delivering these successfully to a high standard. He is very innovative engineer, always with an eye for delivering more effective solutions for both the client and the contractor.“
