The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Nathan Sealy

Said the following about Lee Johnson:

“Lee is an exceptional leader within the E&P team in Amey Consulting Rail. I fully endorse everything written by his initial nominee, James Andrews.“

Alick McLeod

Said the following about Lee Johnson:

“In his Technical Director (Electrical Power) role, I consider Lee Johnson to be exceptionally talented engineer and manager. I say this in context of Lee's ability to initiate innovative ideas around, for example, competence assessment where Lee developed a Competency Assessment Tool which included reference to the UK Spec's IEng and CEng evidence-based requirements.

I consider Lee to have an exemplary 'can-do' attitude towards tasks associated with creating managerial 'tools' to support clear and unambiguous presentations of key performance managerial metrics. He does this without fanfare in an unassuming manner to his absolute credit.

I also consider to be a highly organised person. For example, Lee has the responsibility to manage a large team in terms of benchmarking current competence and providing mentorship support to individuals in support of respective CPDs and potential.

Whilst recognising a very talented group of people in this category, I have no hesitation in nominating Lee Johnson for 2022 Manager of the Year award.“

Timothy Evans

Said the following about Lee Johnson:

“I work alongside Lee as a fellow Technical Director and the work he does in leading the Electrical and Power (E&P) teams sets an example to us all.

He successfully developed a competency assessment tool for all his staff, match this to the Engineering Council Attributes to help in his staff's development and then worked with the other TD's so that we could apply this tool to our disciplines.

He and I deliver the CDM training for all our Engineers and the input into the course material I received from Lee was excellent as it allowed our training to cover all disciplines, to ensure this material was understood Lee developed an online assessment for course attendees to take after the course to demonstrate this, something needed for online learning.

Lee is always enthusiastic in developing the E&P teams and ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to safely and competently carry out the work required. I see him as a role model to all the other TD's“

James Andrews

Said the following about Lee Johnson:

“Lee is the Technical Director for Electrical Power in Amey Consulting. He has overall responsibility for the output of our electrical power teams across the business and takes huge personal pride in ensuring everyone in the team has the skills, knowledge and tools to perform to the best of their abilities.

Lee is an exceptional leader within the business. He has an extraordinary ability to be able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups across the entire spectrum of engineering seniority and experience. He is equally comfortable discussing the minute detail of a specific technical challenge with junior technicians and engineers as he is discussing strategic issues with Business Directors. He is a particularly gifted mentor, able to inspire secondary school students on work experience and able to support a developing engineer in their path towards professional registration.

Lee has developed a series of tools and processes to manage competence in his discipline, and across the other rail design disciplines, including the Competence Assessment Tool (or CAT), which maps competence against Amey’s Career Path Framework and the UK Spec, helping staff and the business understand their capabilities, as well as providing clear opportunities for development and improvement. This helps enormously with staff progression and retention. The tool contains a library of questions that are put to candidates at random, at a level appropriate to their grade, thus removing any subjectivity from the process and highlighting further development needs.

Alongside his skills and effectiveness in the development of people, Lee is also a talented engineer. He consistently demonstrates sound engineering judgement in the production of pragmatic and effective electrical engineering solutions.

Lee personally reviews all changes to Network Rail and British Standards quarterly, digesting the changes and distilling to an easy to understand briefing complete with a test of understanding to ensure the messages have been understood by the business. Lee delivers the briefings himself, providing a link to the senior team on a regular basis, breaking down barriers and encouraging collaboration and team spirit.

Lee is also very passionate about the environment, sustainability, and Amey’s drive to a carbon neutral future. As a carbon champion, he has developed and delivered internal training on the RSSB carbon tool, as well as a wealth of internal material to help teams from all disciplines comply with project carbon reporting and reduction. Similarly he provides CDM training and training in the use of our Engineering Management Manual (EMMa) across the entire Consulting Rail business and leading by example.

Lee’s enthusiasm for his subject is boundless and this clearly rubs off on those around him. His approachability makes him a go-to person for all 60 members of his team, no matter what their position in the company, making him a truly inspirational manager.“
