“Rostering is often considered a thankless task but I want to shine the light on Josh Webster in the Freightliner Rostering department.
Josh has been at Freightliner for 12 years and has been a roster clerk for 9 of them. I have only had him as my roster clerk for the past 3 years.
He not only manages the roster for four depots every week but also provides cover for annual leave and sickness for all other depots within the company.
Additionally, he oversees the uncovered list weekly and deals with infrastructure plans. He has recently taken over the ever-growing Rapid Deployment Driver (RDD) rostering that covers RHTT /MPVs and any other new projects that Freightliner takes on.
It is remarkable how many hours Josh puts into his work. Many people can vouch for receiving his phone calls or emails as early as 6 a.m. or as late as 8 p.m., even on weekends. All this while also dealing with a busy and dynamic family life.
Josh deserves recognition for his hard work and dedication. Roster clerks are the backbone of a well-functioning railway, and Josh is a shining example of this.“
“Perfect choice for nomination in this category. Josh has an incredible ability to multi-task whilst ensuring accuracy and fulfilling operational rostering as needed. He has a keen eye for detail and has a great ability to shuffle around, if necessary, to meet the demands of the business.
I have been on the railway for over 20 years and must say, hand on heart he is the best roster clerk I have ever known. His communication is second to none, great team player and liaises with people like myself regularly to ensure we are getting things done, even from my perspective which is not a priority for Josh but he always accommodates.
His experience and a keen eye for the ability to juggle are one that any company would dream of having. Josh has demonstrated that at a drop of a hat with huge operational changes he adapts to any critical changes that affect the rail operation. On occasions, I have spoken with Josh outside of work when I need an urgent operational favour and he still picks up the phone and works in his time. He always has time for anyone.
I hope he doesn’t mind me mentioning but Josh has had his challenges in his personal life but has shown a high degree of commitment around this and should be recognised for his efforts.
I have worked with Josh for approximately 2 years since I joined Freightliner and it is an absolute pleasure to work with such a dedicated, professional individual and a true gentleman and valued friend. I wish you all the best going forward, good luck.“

“Josh is extremely hard working and often works out of hours to cover unforeseen driver vacancies. I call him “Mastermind” as he has 100s of drivers’ route knowledge from numerous depots stored in his brain! He manages to turn around a long list of uncovered work with his ingenuity, saving Freightliner thousands of pounds weekly, as otherwise several trains would be cancelled. He is always willing to help when a driver needs time off urgently and will come up with a plan to help whenever he can. He reminds me of Roster Clerks in the BR era who understood that running the railway relies on goodwill from all sides. He really deserves recognition for his skills and hard work.“
“Resourcing freight work is a difficult discipline given the dynamic and fluid nature of the work.
Information and tasks can change especially at weekends, leaving train crew sometimes at a loss as to what is required. Unfortunately, this is when many departments or persons are unavailable, not that I can blame them. Doesn’t seem a lot but this can lead to bad communications, expensive taxis and expensive fines. No matter what day it is, I’m confident Josh will have an answer or will find an answer to any queries I might have which saves me having to do it before I go to work. He saves us a lot of hassle and ultimately benefits the company in many ways.“

“Josh has been our roster clerk for the last year or so and does his best to look after all of the RDD team of drivers by booking our hotels and doing his best to match the jobs up with the correct drivers. Plus he looks after the uncovered list each week and always answers his phone and replies to emails I send. Josh has also helped me out accommodating my leave and swapping jobs around so I can take my wife to hospital appointments. He needs to be recognised for all his hard work and long hours he puts in each week.“
