The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Susan Temple

Said the following about Jonathan Glass:

“Jonathan has worked for ScotRail for the last 11 years, primarily in the Train Planning team and now in the Customer Operations team.

Over the last year, Jonathan has worked hard to drive engagement with colleagues across the business whilst working in Train Planning. This had been achieved by writing briefing documents, attending staff roadshows across the network in his own time and by setting up engagement sessions with frontline teams. All of this has given staff the opportunity to provide feedback and for management to answer any questions from frontline staff.

In addition to the above, Jonathan has also sought to gain more experience on the frontline, and has shadowed frontline staff across the network in his own time. He is also a regular supporter of the delivery of special events and has worked at over 200 of these since starting with ScotRail in 2012.

In March 2020 ScotRail introduced its first diversity and inclusion team. As well as attending staff roadshows and promoting the work of the team on Yammer, Jonathan also delivered sessions on the importance on allyship to his department, and on our Chief Operating Officer’s company-wide call to over 200 managers.

Jonathan has also become part of the Diversity and Inclusion steering group, a strategic group focused on embedding D&I into the organisation and who supported ScotRail to achieve Leaders in Diversity, and has been an active member of the Pride of ScotRail network group (recently taking on the role as Chair of the group).

Most recently, Jonathan has joined the Customer Operations Management team at Motherwell station on a temporary basis, managing and supporting the frontline staff working at stations across the Lanarkshire area.

In his spare time, he is an active fundraiser. In doing so, he has raised more than £11,000 for Blood Cancer UK and the Ardgowan Hospice (Greenock) in memory of his late Father. Jonathan and his partner also assisted station staff with the collection and co-ordination of toiletries and supplies for the NHS during the Covid pandemic from Johnstone station, dropping off supplies at Hospitals before and after work.“

Said the following about Jonathan Glass:

“I’d like to vote for Jonathan - he’s a fantastic manager who always gives his all to ScotRail.

Jonathan has been a great help to many new starts in the railway - helping people with job applications, interview skills and helping them with career advice on top of his day job.

He has also been involved in volunteering with travel safety, special events and is now leading our pride employee group.

Jonathan also won’t expect anyone to do something he wouldn’t do himself and leads by example all the time. He is well known in ScotRail and well liked. He makes a big difference every day and I’m proud to call him a colleague and a friend.

- Aimee“

Steven Ho

Said the following about Jonathan Glass:

“I would wholeheartedly nominate Jonathan Glass for Rail Manager of the year.

Jonathan was until very recently my line manager and despite having the entire railway on his shouders sometimes, is always available to help. He has always been a throughly understanding manager and supported me throughout my various personal difficulties over the last few years with nothing but support and without judgement. I consider him a true friend well before I consider him as a colleague.

Previous nominations for him cover pretty much cover the fantastic person and font of Operational and Service Planning Jonathan is. He volunteers for various groups, charities, special events and teams well outwith his remit in Service Planning because he wants to make a difference to the railway and these often see him working beyond his normal hours of work into the night.

You can have all the railway knowledge, timetable planning rules knowledge and theory in the world to be a manager, but you also need the personaility and softer skills to be a true leader and he balances all of that and what is our department's loss is Lanarkshire's gain.“

Colin Berry

Said the following about Jonathan Glass:

“I have nominated Jonathan because he holds all that attributes that are required to be a fantastic manager. He is very responsive and shows great aptitude for problem solving complex tasks in our team. Always willing to be hands on, he has the ability to take control of situations both in the office or on the operations side. He is a great communicator who is confident in his own ability while still retaining respect from everyone who works with him. Jonathan has so much drive and determination to achieve positive outcomes for both his fellow workers and the travelling public alike. He leads from the front and can show creative solutions while still thinking about costs to the company. Jonathan is basically married to his job, puts in long hours outwith his normal hours and is willing to always support colleagues. He also is involved in the Diversity and Incusion team and takes the lead organising LGBTQ+ meetings and events on behalf of the company. Summarising Jonathan encompasses everything that a great manager is all about.“

Said the following about Jonathan Glass:

“I would like to nominate Jonathan Glass for rail manager of the year.

Until very recently he had been my manager for the past 4yrs. He helped me massively when I made the move from operations, it was a huge change but he always made it seem achieveable.

Not only did he teach me a lot in this time but was always there to listen. I don't think I would have coped during the pandemic without having him there checking in as a manager and a friend.

He does not only have a fountain of railway knowledge, but also has the people skills to match.

The biggest thing that makes him stand out to me for this award, is his thirst for not only himself to do well in his career but also others too. He is always there to help anyone that needs it.“

Kayleigh Martin

Said the following about Jonathan Glass:

“I have worked with Jonathan for 6 years.

He is approachable, considerate, knowledgeable, kind hearted & very funny.

If you have have a question related to train planning he’s your man, he’s helped me so much since I joined the department and is a dear friend aswell as a colleague.

When you go out on the network it seems everyone knows him as he is very active within the company social groups.

He built his team in Trainplanning from scratch after a few retirements and his team are incredible and it’s all thanks to him.

He has now moved on to the role of Station Team Manager and I can say that his new team are very lucky to have him.“
