Said the following about Gary Mountain:

“Gary has recently retired after 50 years of dedicated service to the railway, a career that started in 1965 as an engine cleaner for British Rail before progressing through various footplate grades and eventually becoming a driver. During his time on the railway Gary has seen enormous change, from working on steam engines, to the introduction of the pacer and sprinter fleet in the north of England and electrification of the routes between Leeds, Skipton and Ilkley.

Despite the constant challenges of adapting to an ever changing working environment, Gary showed a true professionalism, and was always a model employee whom trainee drivers sought inspiration from. He was an extremely reliable employee with an exemplary safety and productivity record.

Gary was a prominent figure within the mess room, always on hand if anyone needed any advice due to his extensive rules and route knowledge. He had an infectious enthusiasm for the railway, and could be relied upon to brighten any room with tales of what the job was like ‘back in the day’, explaining some of the things that were acceptable during the earlier days of his career, these stories were often met with gasps of disbelief.

Gary was involved in a career threatening incident where two trains collided close to Aisgill Summit, resulting in serious injuries to himself and many of the passengers on board this service. After the incident it was noted how Gary responded with a true professional attitude, and desire to return to work once all rehabilitation was complete.

Throughout his career he remained focused and showed a desire to help out wherever possible, his attitude to the job was second to none and always has the best interests of the company at heart.

All at Northern Rail would like to thank Gary and wish him all the best wherever his future lies.“
