Richard Edwards

Said the following about Gary Desmond:

“Working on the most complex overhead line renewal project on UK infrastructure the OCR Anglia team has continued to exceed programme and Client expectations, establishing a reputation for best practise overhead line project delivery within the industry.

The purpose of the Great Eastern Overhead Line Renewal (GE OLE) project is to renew the life expired fixed termination overhead line equipment (OLE) from Liverpool Street to Chelmsford, with a modern, high reliability auto-tensioned system designed by Furrer and Frey. Delivering significant benefits to the Anglia Route through increased reliability (the current system was installed in circa 1949 and is fixed tension which means that speed restrictions are imposed when the air temperature reaches 25 degrees and above) and significantly reduce maintenance costs.

In the 2015/6 year major works were safely delivered in the Gide Park and Seven Kings areas bringing to completion renewal of the OLE infrastructure project between Brentwood and Seven Kings. The benefits of the work conducted by OCR are already being realised by Anglia Route and passengers. Maintenance cycles from old to new equipment have moved from 4 to 8 years, and mean time delays between train failures reduced from 1679days to 73 days per track mile on the route.

The OCR team achieves cost efficiency by maximising the use of Network Rail labour, plant and high output wiring trains. Based at Chadwell Heath, in parallel to GE project delivery the team also provides support to route maintenance teams and other Anglia OLE projects to ensure route performance in terms of PPM and Enhancement Milestones are maximised. The volume, delivery record and installation quality of work planned and executed by the OCR Anglia team significantly exceeds that delivered by other OLE Delivery teams of far greater size.“

Chris Mackie

Said the following about Gary Desmond:

“The OCR team are currently delivering the Great Eastern & Shenfield to Southend Overhead Line Renewal projects.

Both projects involve the replacement of fixed tension (wire sags when air temperatures rise above 25 degrees resulting into significant disruption to train services) life expired overhead line equipment with a new auto-tensioned overhead line system (approx. 450km of wire) delivered in relatively short engineering blocks - probably Europe's most complicated overhead line project.

The team has been extremely successful over the last 12-months. They are safety focused (particularly regarding the importance of robust planning – the proactive underpinning of any safety performance), passionate and have a genuine commitment to high quality, cost effective and timely delivery.

We were particularly delighted with the wiring works undertaken at Gidea Park between Weeks 25-31 and Christmas 2016 (21no. wire runs over 590 possession hours without a reportable accident) and also recently at the completion of the junction at Seven Kings.

The importance of the successful delivery of the works at Gidea Park was key in the context of the programme and realised significant benefits for key stakeholders – no OLE summer speed restrictions for 16km of railway between Seven Kings and Brentwood! For the first time in a generation.

Overall, it has been a fantastic year for the team and they fully deserves every accolade that comes their way.“
