The RailStaff Awards 2024

Susan Ryall

Said the following about Feila Scally:

“Feila is being nominated by her line manager and her colleagues in Network Rail and Skanska on the Bermondsey Dive Under Project because of her continual drive for improvement, both of herself, the project team and the wider Skanska business.

Feila joined Skanska at the Bermondsey Project in September 2013 as our Senior Health and Safety advisor shortly after a major accident on the project. As a result of the investigation we established that there was no competency requirement for the use of a cut off saw. Working with Stihl, Skanska developed a CITB accredited programme which is now mandated across Skanska and the Thameslink Programme and Feila led in delivering the first of these courses on site here at Bermondsey.

Feila has supported the reduction in the projects lagging indicators and is a key participant in the sites Project Improvement Team. She is driven by her core beliefs of care and concern for all and an insatiable appetite for learning and development. Her assertive and approachable attitude has led to a measureable increase in notifications of safety issues from the site team. In addition Feila has led in the re branding of our “Near Miss” cards which were generally only used by staff to naming them “Observation Cards” that can be used to make positive comment as well as to notify of issues to be addressed. This has led to an increase in the use of these cards by the operatives on site.

In addition to her support to our team at Bermondsey Feila produced the safety submission for the Civils business in the RoSpa Health and Safety awards, the first company submission made and the entry, based on our work here at Bermondsey, was awarded Silver. Currently Bermondsey is achieving the highest scores within Skanska Civil Engineering in external audits. Approximately 22 audits of the project are completed annually including LRQA, RISQS, Principle Contractors License and client and Skanska led audits. At the latest external quarterly safety audit, commissioned by Skanska, the auditor noted “This project progresses with increasing success with regards to continuous improvement, congratulations on another excellent audit”.

Feila places no limitations on her role and sourced Eco Lights which are silent running using Hydrogen rather than diesel, these are used for our works near residential areas, and are particularly beneficial when we are working overnight. She is not afraid to challenge the operations team and was instrumental in supporting a contractor who was not performing as they should through an action plan. When this was not successful she made the recommendation to remove them from site which was done with the full support of the client.

She also challenges us to become more involved in supporting charities and recently completed a 180 kilometre cycle ride around the Ring Of Kerry with a colleague, they raised over £4000 for a local hospital.

Susan Ryall, Skanska Project Director, said “ Feila has been a key member of our team from Day 1, she is a pleasure to work with and I am constantly reminded when observing the positive interaction between Feila and the team the impact of a proactive approach to the management of health, safety and well being. On a personal note I am able to lead the delivery of the project supported by an outstanding Health and Safety professional who is not satisfied with compliance as the standard but constantly seeks improvement and best in class standards. She aspires to an industry where robust health and safety management is joined with improving the well being of the people within our teams, this is also my aspiration and when I unwittingly move away from this path Feila is there to get us back on track. In my opinion Feila is a shining example of how wellbeing is an integral part of Health and Safety management and not simply a nice to have bolt on”

In summary Feila is a key member of our team here at Bermondsey, working alongside us she has raised the awareness of all in key issues on site. Her enthusiasm and drive is infectious and she is held in equally high regard by staff and operatives. Her entry to this category is supported by the entire site team.“

Kevin Sullivan, Programme Manager, said “I have only known Feila for five months, in this time I have been truly impressed with her mannerism, work ethic and the professional approach she undertakes day in and day out. Feila not only carries out the Health and Safety Manager duties for Skanska but she is also the Environmental Manager. Feila is an extremely busy person with a large demand of her time by the site management, site teams and of course from the Client.

She not only ensures that the Project complies with the rules, regulations and procedures for HSEQ as construction progresses but supports the site teams, promotes HSE awareness, delivers the site inductions, develops and implements new safety initiatives, looks after the health and wellbeing of the team and delivers all the reporting that Skanska and the Client require.

Feila is a pleasure to work with, she is well organised, delivers on time, knowledgeable in her field, polite and extremely proactive in the work she undertakes, which is really encouraging to see. I am pleased to support the nomination for this award."

Garry Phillips

Said the following about Feila Scally:

“I nominate Feila Scally for Rail Safety Person of the Year. Feila has supported numerous audits of our health, safety and environment at Bermondsey including our 3rd party certification audits to ensure ongoing certification to OHSAS 18001, ISO14001 and Achilles RISQS.

Despite the extra demands these have put on Feila’s time she has always been very willing to help. During the audits Feila always professionally and effectively answers any questions raised by the auditors, demonstrating her knowledge of the systems and very effectively evidencing compliance to them.

What is clearly evident is her personal enthusiasm for HS&E and her natural communication skills. These skills are even more evident during the site visit part of the audits when Feila’s easy going and open nature allows her to effectively engage with all personnel on site, regardless of their role and standing while ensuring important information is clearly communicated and understood. Feila is a great asset to the Bermondsey project, Skanska and she deserves the title of Rail Safety person of the year.“
