Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Said the following about David Bright:

“I would like to nominate David Bright from SPX Rail Systems for “The Rail Person of the year” award for the following reasons;

David has been working for SPX Rail Systems for the last 13 years. During this time he has been a valued member of the team and continues to do so offering and implementing idea`s from health and safety to process improvements. With his outside the box thinking and knowledge of the shop floor he has helped me solve various challenges that have arisen within the business.

Below are some of the initiatives David has implemented and that I feel has made him eligible for entry into this award category.

Health and Safety and Continued business improvement

- A new process was introduced to improve part protection during shipping to Network Rail, this involved a protective spray being applied to the Clamplock head at the end of the assembly process, as a result of this process any occasional over spray onto the factory floor made the floor slippery and a hazard to the operators working on the area. David identified the hazard and approached the management team with the solution of putting down a textured tape; preventing the floor from being slippery and thus removing the hazard, this has allowed the improved cost reduction shipping process to be continued and further refined to help meet the needs of SPX and Network Rail as part of the industries collaborative approach to reducing costs whilst implementing a common sense to the Life Saving Rules.

Process Improvement

- An initiative to improve stock accuracy was implemented at SPX Rail Systems, Dagenham. David picked a part difficult to handle and time consuming to count and when delivered by the supplier the part was stacked in different directions on a pallet which made it difficult to check delivery against the delivery note, this process also required a manual handling intervention to ensure the goods in where moved to allow for correct counting on each delivery.

David designed a custom stillage where each individual part was housed inside its own tube and each stillage held 50 parts. This has allowed for;

Reduction of manual handling at the suppliers location

Protected storage during transportation lowering the change of damaged component in transit

Removal of manual handling upon goods receipt at SPX

Enhanced storage of components within the production line

Ease of selection for the assembly team as all parts are presented in an easy lift format

David is our SPX Rail person of the year as his continued efforts to better not just his own area of responsibility but his colleagues, suppliers and customers working environment is a great example of how everyone can help each other in the industry.“
