Nominations for Project Manager of the Year

Rebecca Bartlett

Said the following about Christian Irwin:

“We are nominating Christian because he maintains a positive and enthusiastic outlook on everything, even in difficult situations. His bubbly and friendly personality makes him approachable to all and he used this wonderful trait to change a somewhat divided project into a collaborative and effective project where everyone is looking at the same outlook but are not afraid to speak up.

He always strives to meet the four Network Rail behaviours in every aspect of his role. Christian is challenging and always keen to embrace new ideas, including implementing ‘start of the week’ meetings and setting up new procedures for the project. He is customer driven and accountable, proved by his engagement with the Welsh government and the local authority and his building of stronger relationships with the contractors which has been invaluable. He ensures that problems are flagged before they become an issue and was also involved with the project re-authority.

When faced with a staff injury that involved one of our contractors to be seriously injured on site; he encouraged support throughout the project. To thank a local charity that saved our colleagues life; Christian pulled together a fundraising team to hold a very successful charity to show our appreciation so they can continue to save lives. Christian encouraged all contractors on the project to attend and donate. The event raised in excess of an outstanding £20,000.00 which the charity are immensely grateful for.

Christian encourages staff development, best practice and equal opportunities for all and is always approachable. He is collaborative; a team player who successfully turned a divided project into one where a positive outlook is encouraged. He arranges entertaining and stimulating team building events to maintain and develop positive relationships in the team.

He was even willing to clean Cardiff Queen Street station with a duster whilst wearing an apron! That'€™s true dedication for you!“
