The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Graduate of the Year

Matt Wickham

Said the following about Chris Atkinson:

“Chris joined the Graduate scheme late last year. From the outset Chris has become a major asset on the Cross rail project. One of his first tasks was to help organise are Xmas Commissioning. He played a major role supporting the senior team and took on numerous tasks which were vital in helping the successful delivery. Chris is developing quickly and is now supporting the implementation of ETCS in the Heathrow area. Another high profile project which I am sure he will help successfully deliver.

His work is always professional, to a high standard and accurate and on-time. The whole team values his contribution to the project.

I am sure this is the start of a successful career for Chris in the railway industry.“

Creativity and innovation.“

John Parkin

Said the following about Chris Atkinson:

“From the very first time I met Christopher I was impressed by his desire to learn as much as possible about all aspects of our signalling related works, from the ground up.

He accompanied a team on site where they were installing signal bases and structures, where he willingly joined in the physical works without being asked.

He was tasked with overseeing the logistics associated with preparing the depot yard for the Easter 2016 commissioning, this included liaising with sub contractors and managing their on site activities and lifts. He carried out this task with a professionalism one would only expect of a much more experienced member of staff.

I do believe that he has the ability to deal with whatever he comes across in his life and will achieve his professional goals.

I state with all honesty that I have never, in all my career met someone so young who has earned my respect so quickly, I therefore believe that not only does he deserve to be nominated for graduate of the year, he deserves to win it.“

Sean Gutsell

Said the following about Chris Atkinson:

“Chris joined the Alstom late last year, a fresh graduate with absolutely no experience of the railway or project management. Within the first four weeks of arriving he had picked up the fundamentals and was managing Christmas commissioning resources. Chris was able to hit the ground running in a technically complex and mentally demanding environment. Chris demonstrates the unique ability to learn whilst managing, he has shown on numerous occasions the ability to adapt and respond in a high pressure environment. Chris has developed within the project team to a point where he contributed heavily to the Crossrail West Stage I and J commissionings. He now manages civils design for Crossrail West and has also been appointed a project management role on the Heathrow Tunnel ETCS project.

Safety in the railway is our top priority, managing our safety processes is a very large task. No mistakes can be made and issues must be reported effectively to those who can resolve them. 3 months into his graduate scheme, Chris produced a Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Dashboard. This dashboard captures and monitors all close call information recorded by ATUK on Crossrail West, it ensured all close calls and inspections were protected and tracked for closure. This tool then produced reports for high level management each month. Chris continued to develop this tool and it has now been rolled out to the Bristol Resignalling Project, East Notts Modular Signalling Project, Crossrail Anglia and the ETCS installation across the Heathrow tunnel. Less than a year into his graduate scheme and he has already made a dramatic contribution to health and safety. Chris has continued to implement improved processes and software throughout the business, from Resource cost loading to improved document control workflows.

Chris is an incredibly determined individual, he has been an employee less than a year and is now managing two separate projects whilst building and maintaining new company process. He gives far more than the average graduate and is an incredible addition to the team.“

Judy Domoney

Said the following about Chris Atkinson:

“Chris Joined the ETCS team two months ago, in that short space of time he has merged with the project and is actively managing the program. His management style allows him to see through conflict and promote collaboration at all levels. Chris is capable of logically breaking down issues and proposing action all parties agree with, he has become a capable negotiator and as a result can shield the team from pressure and apply it where necessary. Chris shows the key traits of an experienced project manager, he has the buy in of all his colleagues and delivers professionally.“
