Said the following about Carl Mieleszko:

“Carl was working as the Train Manager on 1O16, service. He was on the final leg of the journey when the train was stopped due to a trespasser on the line. The other crew members kicked into action, the driver informing the Signaller, the other crew member calling control. Carl decided to get down on the track to try to engage with the gentleman. It was obvious the man was in a bad way mentally, and this meant he was coming across as angry and aggressive. Despite this Carl persevered in engaging in conversation with him, trying to calm him and above all else trying to keep him safe, especially from the danger of the third rail until he knew for sure the power was off. He managed to get the man talking and sat with him to listen. The man had been experiencing many troubles at home and had come to think he was better off taking his life. Carl had was able to speak with him with a level of understanding, having had his own issues to deal with in the past. He patiently stayed and listened until Police help arrived. They safely escorted the man to safety and to get the help he needed. Carl acted in a selfless, compassionate way, despite the erratic behaviour, calming and keeping this person safe until help arrived. I think he deserves to win this award.“
