Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Catherine Cooper

Said the following about Aylesbury Culvert Temporary Support:

““Due to the Victorian culvert at Aylesbury starting to move under load in January 2023, this team worked solidly for 4 days during a possession, overseeing the installation of a unique propping solution in a very confined area. This ensured the line for critical freight and passenger service continued to move across a collapsed culvert.

Working with a lot of engineering judgement, innovative thinking and good data analysis, the team managed to keep the network running, whilst removing the equivalent amount of water in a 25-metre swimming pool every 8 minutes through pumps at either side of the culvert. This was a very unusual situation which hugely challenged the team and the industry. The works also included multi-agency liaison including Environment Agency, Canal & Rivers Trust, Chiltern Railways and freight operators. This team ensured safety and performance were paramount in their decision making.

Without the team’s intervention, the single-line PRA line would have been closed causing significant delay to critical national infrastructure works and passenger service, potentially until the permanent renewal of the culvert, which was completed on 19th August.““
