Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Haitham Ayoubi

Said the following about Hashim Syed:

“Hashim joined Jacobs as an apprentice CAD technician in September 2015 and through his mature approach to learning and work, his collaborative attitude and by stepping up to all types of challenges he developed to become a key member of the Rail Civils design team and proved himself to be essential member of the Western Rail Link to Heathrow (WRLtH) project team in Reading. Hashim completed his Level3 apprenticeship and obtained ICE Eng Tech qualification by end of 2018, he recently started a graduate apprenticeship course with London South Bank University. He self-managed his responsibilities to achieve the Level 3 apprenticeship and his relationship with the apprenticeship provider Stegta, he owned the process to achieve his ICE qualification and achieved both while maintaining dedication to his role and to project delivery. Hashim’s reliability, willingness to take on challenging tasks, owning his tasks and taking leadership role without hesitation are some of the positive points made by discipline leads, engineering and project managers supporting this nomination.

Due to the small size of the team Hashim practically self-taught Microstation and Auto CAD 2D and 3D modelling with little guidance. He took initiative in his learning using training modules and by on the job practice. He sought advice from experienced colleagues in other teams and offices to develop complex 3D models and chased advice from supplier’s technical support teams to solve software related problems.

In a short period Hashim became a key CAD resource for the Civils team in Reading with responsibility for the team’s CAD deliverables for CrossRail Stockley project, WRLtH and other tasks. With his dedication and professional manner Hashim progressed to become the team’s lead modeler assisting in recruitment process of new CAD resources and mentoring CAD apprentices guiding them in Microstation and documents management system. He is a go to person for colleagues for advice on Microstation and Projectwise. He worked independently with other teams on Telecoms and Geotechnical deliverables and with the Eithad project Civils teams in Glasgow and London.

Hashim’s key achievement is his role and contribution to the Western Rail Link to Heathrow project. He developed a complex 3D models such as the earthworks model, he is CAD coordinator on this large muti-diciplinary project and a key member of the project information management team fulfilling tasks such as:

- Running CAD QA on drawing deliverables, making sure they were compliant with the Network Rail CAD Standards.

- Chairing the Lead Modellers call where he made sure all disciplines were coordinating with each other which ensured there were no gaps or overlaps in the design.

- Clash checks and reporting. Using Bentley Navigator to build the Federated Model then clash check each discipline against one another. Finally, he then created clash reports which were issued to the disciplines allowing them to resolve before the IDC meetings.

- Recently developed a fly through visualisation of the WRLtH project by learning and applying Bentley LumenRT software which he presented at a client meeting.

In addition to his CAD capabilities Hashim is also sought after to assist WRLtH Project and Engineering Management team in preparation of presentations material, assisting in meetings, handling of documents control, maintain registers and reporting.

Hashim is continuing his apprentice training to achieve an engineering degree and aims to become a chartered engineer. He is a prime example of the value of the apprenticeship programme to the keen apprentice and to the business.“
