Said the following about Stuart Barrett:

“On Saturday 13th August 2016 Stuart was in the ticket office at Southport Station when he heard a call over the radio for a first aider to help a man who had collapsed on the train. Stuart made his way to the train to assist. When Stuart arrived on the scene the man was unconscious on the floor and his colleague Paul (Station Assistant) was on the phone to emergency services. Stuart checked the man for a response and received no response from him. He then checked for breathing again and there was no breathing at this point. He put the man on his back and asked Paul to clear the train of passengers. Stuart then proceeded to attach the defibrillator and when vital signs were detected again instructions on the AED advised to shock. Stuart administered a shock to the man and started CPR with chest compressions and breaths. Again the AED advised of no vital signs and requested a second shock.. Stuart did this again and continued CPR at this point. The gentleman took a deep breath and at that time the paramedics arrived. The paramedic asked him to continue until he could take over. The man seemed to be breathing again, when the paramedic took over Stuart spoke to the man’s wife to reassure her and sat with her until the paramedics and fire brigade stretchered the man off the train and took him to hospital. Later the first paramedic on the scene returned to thank Stuart for his actions he had taken. Dr Hughes also called from the hospital to say that the man’s life had been saved.

The following week Stuart received a call from the gentleman’s daughter Stephanie Brooks. Stephanie contacted via phone to say her father is sat up and the family was able to speak with him. She said that Stuart had made such a difference to all of their lives. She told Stuart that her father used to be a school teacher and had been tutoring her daughter and that she had been able to go into the hospital and tell him that she had passed her exams.

We are very proud of Stuart and the actions he took on that day. His training in CPR and use of the AED was essential in this incident. If Stuart had not have done what he did by the time the paramedics got there the man would have died. And this was backed up by the feedback from both the paramedic and the A&E Doctor.

"Stuart did an amazing job a made a huge difference to what could have been a very different outcome. Later on I spoke to Sandhills control regarding disruption and MEC informed me that the A&E doctor had contacted them to commend Stuart on his actions and quick response and had he not acted so quickly the passenger would not be here. The first responding paramedic came back later to let us know that the passenger had been stabilised got his heart rhythm back and was being transferred to broad green for scheduled surgery and although very ill would make a recovery.....Yvonne , Station Assistant, Southport Station."

"Stuart carried out CPR and had to administer shock to the man twice, whilst doing chest compressions and breaths on the man the man exhaled and seemed to start breathing again, there’s no doubt about it Stuart saved the man’s life with his fast reactions and knowledge of first aid. The Paramedic came back to shake Stuarts hand and thank him for saving the Man’s life......Paul, Station Assistant, Southport Station."“
