Said the following about Mark Smith:

“Mark was based at Ashford International station for the morning peak, carrying out his role as Mobile Operations Manager. A conductor reported that a male had crossed the tracks and then got on his train. He had no ticket or money.

The man then alighted at Ashford and was sat country end of Platform ½. Mark approached the man and asked how he was. The man said he was not in a good place and as the conversation went on the man clarified that he was suicidal and wanted help. The man asked if he could have a smoke, at which Mark said that was only permitted in front of the station in order to get the man away from the railway and to a place of safety. The BTP were contacted and when they arrived, they took the man into custody.

This is a great example of what a difference starting a conversation with someone can have. Mark also demonstrated great practice in stating the man had to leave the railway in order to have his cigarette.“
