The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Emma Irons

Said the following about Steve Lewis:

“Steve is a wholly supportive and brilliant manager. Whilst he has been working at Southeastern, he has taken on various roles successfully. He was asked to take on management of a struggling roster team and made some very quick and efficient changes that have improved the performance of the team and built a sturdy, cohesive team.

Recently, he has implemented many new strategies for the Company. In particular, the introduction of the competency manager. Through Steve's experience in Safety and Performance, he has driven the team to ensure all competencies for the conductor and on board manager are kept up to date within the standards. As a result of this, the role has now become permanent.

Steve's role within the Company is Area Manager Safety and Performance, BUT Steve also oversees the roster department, manages the Competency Managers, steps up when required into Area Manager for Stations and also deputizes the role of General Manager when needed. Steve's work ethic, effort and support does not go unnoticed and as a whole, continues to improve the standards required and the training he provides for this has achieved very high standards, which in itself has helped the Company as a whole

Not often do we get the opportunity to praise a member of management, so this allows me to nominate Steve for his dedication to his staff and Southeastern, so he receives the recognition and the thanks he deserves.“

Ann Cuthbertson

“I would like to mirror everything that Emma has said previously. Steve will listen to you if you have any issues - he will try and help to resolve your issues. Steve is on hand to offer opinions and perspective to help our ideas develop. He is supportive and has a great sense of humour too!“

Sarah Knox

Said the following about Steve Lewis:

“I have had a few personal issues and always found that Steve has been there and supported me all he can.

Steve has offered me some fantastic chances to better my railway career and supported me with all my choices and decisions.

Steve always makes you feel comfortable and at ease listens to everything you have to say and always remains completely professional.

Steve seems to have lots of responsibility covering several different roles but still always makes time to listen and support anyone that needs help.“

Rhiannon Jones

Said the following about Steve Lewis:

“I cannot thank Steve enough in the support he gave me whilst I was struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after an incident at work involving a suicidal person who intending on taking her own life and mine by jumping in front on an oncoming train.

I struggled with the symptoms for months before I was diagnosed with PTSD and was afraid to tell my then manager fearing the consequences however with the support of close colleague I was able to tell of my plight. The support I received was not forthcoming & any I did received lacked empathy left me at times not going into work.

Steve came to my rescue after colleagues expressed concerns with the chain of care I was receiving. Steve stepped up when my own manager failed me, straight away he sat me down in his office, discussed a plan of action and he stuck to it.

Weekly face to face welfare chats and calls even whilst he was heading away for the weekend. Steve made time for me even whilst he was doing his own job as Area Manager for Safety and Performance, overseeing the roster department, managing the Competency Managers and stepped up to Area manager for stations at a time when station managers were deciding to leave the company leaving him with the task of finding replacements quickly and a great job he did too the management team he put in place was the best choice for the area and Steve gained a great deal of respect from front line colleagues.

Whilst doing all this he still had time for me to support me through this difficult time had it not been for Steve and my colleagues I would have most likely have left the railway. Steve is a extremely supportive manager, he is dedicated to supporting the staff and I can't thank him enough for his support. I firmly believe Steve deserves recognition for all that he’s done and does for colleagues going through difficult times.“
