Said the following about Paul Sunderland:

“On Saturday 23rd March 2019 conductor Paul Sunderland was working a train into Shipley station. Paul and his driver Andrew Williams remained calm & dealt with a distressed female who was at the station & wanted to end her life.

Paul & Andrew went above & beyond their duties with regards to the safety of the distressed female, it was an act of bravery to grab the person & detain them until the arrival of the West Yorkshire police especially when it was discovered the person had some sort of razor blade in their hand. It was a very traumatic situation & once the police had taken the person into custody, Paul continued to look after his customers on board the train & apologized for the delay.

On Wednesday 2nd October 2019 Paul had a male customer on board his train & on arrival at Bingley station the male went to walk towards the tunnel rather than the exit. Paul followed him & by speaking to the customer managed to persuade him to re-join the train, a medical team member telephoned the customer & Paul spoke to them & advised they were travelling towards Leeds. The medical team & BTP met the train on arrival at Leeds station.“

Said the following about Paul Sunderland:

“Paul is a very approachable and comitted member of the team.

He has consistently shown compassion and professionalism dealing with the general public and is a true embassador and role model to others.

Paul's calm approach and conduct in the two situations he was faced with resulted in a positive outcome where he has hopefully steered the individuals towards a safe place with the support they need.“

Catherine Hartley

Said the following about Paul Sunderland:

“Mr Paul Sunderland has dealt with more than one suicide attempt during the last year. He has also dealt with other issues which he does in a very calm and dignified way. On a personal level away from his working life he has had issues also to deal with which as a credit to him have not impacted on his working life. After the death of his mother earlier this year he was personable responsible through his kind-heart of donating and raising not an insubstantial sum of money for Manorlands. He also was there for me on the death of my partner in a very supportive role.“
