“While conducting station patrols Mike Niles & Gentian Kala came a across a male standing perilously close to the platform edge. Mike approached the male and attempted to engage the male in a conversation but the male broke down and claimed he was going to end his life by jumping in front of a fast train. Gentian Kala immediately got on the phone to the signaler and soon after the emergency services. Mike’s persistence paid off as the male agreed to leave the platform and was ushered to safer part of the station. Mike and Gentian continued engaging with the male as they waited for the BTP and paramedics to arrive and in this time the male confessed he has lost custody of his children and has nothing left worth living for. The pair kept reassuring the male until the paramedics arrived who then assessed him and took him to hospital. Mike & Gentian’s quick actions saved the male’s life not to mention the service disruption on the line.“
“Just a line to thank you for an absolutely incredible night. The night itself was really fantastic and I said to my wife, June, just let’s sit back and enjoy it: no pressure as I didn't really think that I would win! Well, as soon as 25 years were mentioned, I took one look at June, while shaking my head in disbelief. Then the marvelous rail and face shaped glittering award and a certificate as well…………………and then the (totally unexpected) cheque!. I was also extremely pleased to see David Maidment recognised. His achievement very appropriately wins the whole night for me and the standing ovation that he received was very well deserved. It was really worth being there just for that. Thanks again to all who were involved in this event (I am now drinking my coffee out of the Rail Seventeen cup at work!).”
