Project overview:

The Challenge

Key players in the East Midlands rail industry were looking for an innovative way to attract bright new talent and engage school aged children towards STEM related subjects with a view to a career on the railway.

Our Approach

By Design and http://www.dres.org.uk/WP/ developed the concept of Innovative Rail ‘iRail’ and have designed, managed and delivered a high-profile STEM showcase event and outreach programme bringing regional schools together at an annual event. Working closely with Rail Forum Midlands, Learn by Design have established a platform of rail leaders that inspire learners via industry led events and workshops.

The platform both showcases the rail industry and whilst demonstrating the science and engineering career opportunities available in this growing area. The day provides the Rail industry with the opportunity to not only promote their activity but also network with other key players and interact with young people. Students are also given an engineering challenge to be judged by a panel of experts.

The Result

Since 2009 iRail has attracted hundreds of school students from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Birmingham with competing solutions to a railway engineering problem. Now organised as part of The Big Bang, the event is now a highlight of the rail industry calendar, providing genuine opportunities for young people and a firmly established brand in the region.

The Marketing team has developed and grown since the logo relaunch and now consists of Charlotte Wale - Graphics Assistant, Amelia Clarke - Social Media Assistant with their expertise, supporting Emma Wallbank - Digital Marketing Manager for Learn by Design.

"I am incredibly proud of the iRail brand and how we have consistently supported The Rail Forum Derby in promoting iRail to over 150,000 young people since in conception - social media marketing, graphics and branding plays an incredible valuable part in showcasing careers in rail to young people. The iRail2019 hashtag reached over 35,000 people this year and brought together businesses, schools and leaders engaging in the promotion of the rail industry in the Midlands. Learn by Design have an outstanding team of educational communicators that raise aspirations and inspire learners to explore career opportunities in rail. We work hard as a team to bring the best of rail innovation to young people in schools in the region."
