The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Sam Clark

Said the following about John Kelly:

“John is a very proactive, supportive manager, who constantly pushes you to achieve your full potential. He recognises the strengths in all his staff; he believes in the abilities and potential capabilities of a person even if they don't see it for themselves yet. John is worthy of the award because through his managerial style, team morale is through the roof! He plans regular, structured team meetings with a rotation of staff, making us all feel like we can make a difference.

He supports, encourages and enables career development. He empowers, motivates and gives you the confidence to carry out your job to be the best signaller you can be. He writes detailed monthly newsletters, distributed to the team, keeping everyone in the loop on the ever changing landscape at Network Rail. When faced with unprecedented staff sickness, doesn't hesitate to roll up his sleeves and work signal boxes. He organises social events, keeps in contact with retired signallers and goes above and beyond to accommodate personal issues.

This all results in West Cornwall feeling like a fantastic team to be a part of, all working together like a well-oiled machine to have a direct positive impact on train running performance.“
