The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Jane Murray

Said the following about Barrow in Furness Platform Staff:

““I would like to nominate the Barrow in Furness Platform Staff for the Rail Team Award, who have all worked above and beyond in exceptional circumstances from flooding in the earlier part of the year to managing the station for our customers during testing times of severe disruption.

These staff are the forefront for our customers at Barrow Station and the first port of call for all inquiries and complaints. They deal with issues way beyond their remit and they do this with immense professionalism and commitment.

Recently Cumbria have had major issues due to flooding cutting Barrow off for hours. Each and every one of them deal with each day on its own merit and they had to make instant decisions to keep our customers on the move either by replacement bus services or by taxis, during the floods neither of the aforementioned were applicable as the station area was cut off for hours. Staff then had to arrange hotel accommodation for customers unable to get home and this continued well into the early hours. There professionalism shone through during these exceptional and difficult times and I was proud of all of them coming together as a team and dealing with issues way beyond what was expected of them and working long hours to help and assist each other.

Each day brings new issues and scenarios for them to deal with and I can honestly say that they daily continue to help and assist each other keeping professional and delivering excellent customer service whilst still doing their day job to which I must say has been to an exceptionally high standard.

I feel they deserve to be acknowledged as the unsung heroes of Cumbria who keep customers informed and the train services running with dedication and care.“
