Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Peter Dempsey

Said the following about Stewart Player:

“I am nominating Stewart for this award as the Head of Operations at GWR for being a visionary Head of Department within the Rail industry.

Stewart has been the driving force at GWR behind the change in the way GWR conducted competence assessments and introducing new technology to help make the assessment process easier. Stewart introduced an electronic assessment system using tablets allowing managers to spend more time with those they manager on the job rather than being stuck in an office.

On a personal front I was recruited by Stewart 4 years ago with the brief to re-launch the GWR eLearning system. It had been launched twice before but had not embedded within the business well. Stewart gave me a brief to review and relaunch the system. Stewart faced many challenges from the business at times of financial pressures where there was calls to once again scrap the system. Under Stewart's guidance and management, Stewart had to manage the business expectations while still showing faith in my abilities we could make the system work. The key was getting the business to understand we needed time and a little space to ensure this time it was embedded correctly. Many managers would have simply gone with what a business demanded from the board and scrapped the project if it was not paying back its investment quickly, but Stewart's visions and trust in his team to get it right has now paid off with not only operational departments using eLearning to manage operational competence as part of the competence assessment process, but other departments around GWR now utilise our eLearning system to manage many different training needs.

The introduction of tablet based assessments and eLearning within GWR has helped improve the management of competence, increased blended learning and overall increased productivity, which overall has meant GWR staff are serving our customers better and colleagues are supported by managers in the workplace by seeing managers or assessors on a more regular basis. All of this would not have been achieved if it was not for the vision of Stewart and the trust he shows in his team to help him get the job done.“
