Said the following about Nigel Venneear:

“Nigel was on the last hour of his shift at Hitchin station when he was standing on platform 2 talking to a passenger. Suddenly he heard a thud and turned around to see a customer lying on the floor. Nigel went over to investigate and saw that the customer had hit his head really hard on the floor and was unconscious and was bleeding from his head. He called the emergency services and asked for an ambulance, whilst they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive Nigel stayed with the customer trying to stop the bleeding but noticed that the customer had stopped breathing.

Nigel remained on the phone with the ambulance and gave them information on what was happening, and was asked to get the defibrillator, however, in Nigel’s quick thinking he said that in his opinion the 2-3 minutes it would take to get this he was worried that the male would be alone and no one could help with stopping the blood flow. At this this point he was advised over the phone to give the make a sharp and strong hit to the middle of the chest to try and resuscitate him, Nigel did this and by doing so the customer coughed and spluttered back to life. The emergency services then arrived and took the customer away for treatment.

Nigel remained cool and calm throughout and did all he could to help save the customer’s life. This was an outstanding contribution from Nigel and went well over and above the call of duty.“
