Gary Cooper
Head of Operations
Association of Train Operating Companies
Background: Gary has worked in the industry for 25 years in posts from the front-line to the boardroom.
Starting as a station supervisor and holding posts in operations and safety up to Professional Head, he then moved to other disciplines.
He was one of the first generation Commercial Directors for both British Rail and private sector train companies, and has held Board positions for Engineering, Planning, Major Projects, Procurement and Marketing and Retailing.
In addition to other posts, for the last seven years he has coordinated on behalf of the industry the National Task Force, the sector’s most senior cross-industry body which leads activity to improve railway punctuality.
He also runs a small consultancy, when time allows, which provides organisational change, project management and coaching services for the rail, bus and charitable sectors.

Victoria Pender
Group Director, Government & Corporate Affairs
Network Rail
Background:
Network Rail controls the national rail network infrastructure, with responsibility for maintenance, operations, renewals and enhancements.
Victoria was involved in establishing the company in 2002, including name, image, branding and subsequent promotion of the company. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, she is a member of the Executive Committee and is responsible for all aspects of the Government & Corporate Affairs programme, including corporate social responsibility, external stakeholders, politicians, media, internal communications, external liaison, community relations, marketing services, and branding.

Steve Diksa
Assurance Director

Background: Steve joined Bridgeway from Network Rail where he was the H&S Specialist Trackside, responsible for developing standards and policies on track worker safety. A career railwayman Steve joined the railway in 1978 as a trackman in Permanent Way Gang 22. Post-privatisation he worked for Balfour Beatty from 1995-97 in the Eastern IMC, as a Trainer and then Training and Development Manager, assuming overall responsibility for the Training and Competence team of circa 120 staff for the delivery of training for 8,000 staff. In 1997 he joined Jarvis as General Manager running the Training and Competence team of 150 delivering of training for a work force numbering 10,000. By now a leading exponent of railway safety dynamics Steve was appointed chief executive of Rail Training Audit Services, then part of Railtrack, in 1999. From this position he moved into Network Rail as Safety Competence Development Specialist before moving to Bridgeway Consulting as the Assurance Director in 2008.

Background:
Andy Milne has a comprehensive background in railway communications. At Express PR he has worked with Heathrow Express, Silverlink Trains, Catalis Rail Training and many other railway companies.
Since 1997 he has edited RailStaff Select, driving an agenda of pro-rail, up beat, stories designed to support and encourage all who work in railways.
Andy is passionate about the people who work in the industry and the need to promulgate the true, behind-the-scenes stories of what the rail industry really offers. His work as a motivational speaker underscores a determination to see people exceed their goals and the industry he serves prosper.

Grahame Taylor

The Rail Engineer
Background:
Grahame has been a career railway civil engineer since the mid 1960s.
Having worked on many parts of the UK network, he has had wide experience of structural and track engineering on both design and maintenance. Latterly he has been involved with the development of his TERN system of low cost signalling for minor lines
He joined the Rail Engineer as a writer in 2006 and became the Editor two years later. With an eye to the future, he reckons that, “With its wide and varied coverage of engineering, the Rail Engineer magazine is a great medium to introduce engineers, young and not so young, to the experiences of others.”

Laurence McKidd

Background:
Laurence McKidd commenced his career in the Civil Engineering Industry with Gleeson’s as a Graduate Civil Engineer. He subsequently joined Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering and was the Project Director for the £108 million Second Severn Approach Roads.
He joined the VGC Group in 1998 as Operations Director with a remit to continue the development of the rail business. He and the team have worked on many successful Projects providing hundreds of safety critical staff, track gangs and civil’s personnel to high profile contracts such as the Euston remodelling, Watford to Bletchley, GTBB JV, Stockport WCML, East London Line, Waterloo and City and the LUL Track Alliance. In addition to providing labour resources, VGC Rail Projects hold a Rail Plant Operating Company Licence for operating the Long Welded Rail Trains on behalf of Network Rail. The Rail Projects business also specialise in undertaking priced civil packages within the Rail Industry.
In his new role as Managing Director, reporting directly into the Chairman Sean Fitzpatrick, Laurence is responsible for the strategic direction of the five operating companies and ensuring that Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental priorities go hand in hand with delivering a quality product.
