““Tom Gubb joined McGinley in August 2020 at age 16 on a Level 2, 24-month, Recruitment Resourcer apprenticeship.
It was a difficult introduction for Tom; only eight weeks after he started, the UK went into a second lockdown, and he was faced with working from home - not ideal for a new entrant, particularly at 16!
However, this didn’t phase him, during that time he worked continuously, learning about all aspects of rail and construction, as well as the requirements and protocols that are necessary to have a career in our industry. Making outstanding contributions to him team, the business and an industry as a whole.
Initially, Tom worked on the Network Rail CP5 account, liaising with new workers, and organising training. He quickly became one of the most sought-after people on the contract due to his dedication to the workforce, great problem-solving skills and willingness to learn anything new.
In 2021 Tom moved across to our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Team, under the guidance of our Corporate Responsibility Manager, Janet Hector, and HR Director Fiona Burke, to pursue a passion for sourcing, supporting, and bringing in new entrants.
Tom has been involved in recruiting within the communities in which we work and attend many events, from careers fairs and school taster days to mock interview events and community programmes such as the City Harvest Food Warehouse. He is heavily involved in our apprentice programme as well as liaising with the DWP and our training providers to recruit and monitor progression of all our new blue hats. Tom has embraced all the challenges asked of him, even meeting with our local MP in Watford in November 2021.
From the very start, Tom’s enthusiasm to learn resonated through our business and he has grown in confidence. He constantly strives to find new and improved ways of working and recruiting, and at the same time advocates for his workers. He is an anchor for his team and workers and clients alike. And to top it off, he is still only 18 – with a fantastic career ahead of him!““
