“The Internal Communication team at Transport for Wales have worked extremely hard to create a forum for staff to share information, celebrate success and inform the wider business.
The team launched ‘Exchanges’ calls during Covid, these were held daily to keep all staff informed of Covid restrictions and safety updates. As the pandemic became the new normal these calls evolved into a weekly call hosted live on Microsoft Teams.
This is a call which ALL colleagues are invited to join from their own location. During this 30-minute broadcast (now extended to 1 hour every fortnight) a Director or other member of senior management shares progress or an update from their area. Colleagues are also invited to contribute with questions, comments, feedback, and other matters of important information, including safety moments or a success from the week. This is an engaging, collaborative way of communicating across the business and allows frontline staff to pose questions directly to Directors and Heads of Department.
Not all colleagues are able to tune in to Exchanges live so a recording is circulated after the call and a summary is also sent to all staff at TfW. During Covid, Exchanges averaged over 100 live listeners every call.“
“The Lifesaver award seeks to recognise those individuals who have intervened to potentially save the life of a vulnerable person on the rail network, and to demonstrate that talking and listening to someone in need can make a huge difference. Samaritans’ aims of breaking down barriers to intervening and the myths about suicide are now imbedded in rail culture with over 10,500 staff trained, while the number of interventions are up by 34% from April 2015. Empowering staff to support vulnerable members of the public, colleagues, friends or family remains a core part of the relationship between the rail industry and Samaritans and The Lifesaver award is an opportunity to highlight this crucial on-going work as well as encouraging rail staff to be champions for our service.”
