The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Keira McLuskey

Said the following about Riccardo Demurtas:

“Riccardo is an incredibly talented, highly-driven individual whose contribution to the Sustainability team in Scotland has no end. He joined the team as a decarbonisation specialist in 2021 and as well as writing a strategy to transition our road fleet to electric vehicles, collated a register of over 300 opportunities to save energy, carbon and money across the business. These opportunities and savings are now being realised and include the installation of a new heating system at Cathcart Electrical Control Room, where he sourced an external grant to pay for the project.

He was quickly promoted to Environment Manager and now leads a small team of sustainability professionals. In the short time he has been in this role, he has transformed how the team collate and report (waste, energy, biodiversity, climate change etc.) data, creating a performance dashboard to monitor and demonstrate our progress to colleagues and stakeholders alike and has created a microsite to communicate important information across Scotland's Railway.

He has also conducted a huge stakeholder engagement and PACE mapping exercise which will embed sustainability cradle to grave and in everything that we do in Scotland and beyond. The climate change threat feels more real than ever and the challenging decarbonisation targets that lie before us are intimidating. However, with steadfast, hardworking and motivating colleagues like Riccardo, I feel optimistic that we will achieve everything we set out to do. He is already a well-known and liked member of Scotland's Railway and a credit to the Sustainability profession. If Riccardo won this award, not only would someone very deserving of the title win but, given the lack of a sustainability category, it would demonstrate Rail's commitment to addressing the climate change crisis.“
