Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Lorna Richardson

Said the following about Phil Corns:

“Working within a multi-disciplinary skilled team, Phil and his Installation colleagues successfully commissioned a very challenging and complex area of Installation involving circa 700 Axle Counter heads and 12 new Equipment Rooms.

Paddington is a notoriously complex location, with the works being successfully completed across a multitude of Installation staff and subcontractors.

During the project lifecycle, Phil personally resolved a multitude of complex engineering issues which certainly aided the project programme and contributed to a successful delivery.

Post Commissioning, his team were also successful in recovering circa 12 miles of redundant Location cases and cable recoveries without incident.

Comments from Phil’s line manager Karl Fulcher.

I have known Phil for the entire period of my railway career (19yrs) when we started as trainees working for Balfour Beatty Signalling division. Throughout that period, I have never known him to shy away from a challenge or falter when under pressure. He has and always will be a natural born leader who fills others with confidence when within his presence. He continues to help and develop others around him the further he progresses within his career and if anyone deserves an award it would be him. I certainly look froward to many more years working alongside him, as I know personally that my career wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for his continued help and support.

Quote from Gavin Reid at Network Rail.

I’ve worked with Phil for approx. six years, most of which as his opposite number in the Client (Network Rail) organisation, whilst we’ve been delivering the Signalling elements of several major complex multi-disciplinary projects. It was obvious from day one that Phil wasn’t just interested in installing things, he was also interested in the engineering and design development of what he was being asked to build and confidently challenged others when he felt that tasks could have been done better, safer and/or more efficiently...and usually his suggestions ended up being taken forward.

Phil is a great person to have on site with his jovial personality and can-do attitude. He is highly organised, leads his team from the front, and is regularly found on site “getting stuck in” alongside them, sharing his experience whilst building their confidence and developing their skills.“
