The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Award for Charity

Joanna Thompson

Said the following about Network Rail and Inspire Engineers:

“My nomination for the Award for Charity is for Gary Vickerman and the joint team of Engineers from Network Rail (Wales) and Inspire (Structures) who worked together to enable Llangollen Heritage Railway to reopen.

Llangollen Heritage Railway had been badly affected by Covid and had been forced to close – to help them in reopening the railway a joint team from Inspire (Structures) and Network Rail Wales donated their time and skills to examine all the structures, including culverts, bridges and a tunnel.

These examinations were needed to allow trains to run, and the volunteer led railway did not have the funds to pay for them.

Gary arranged for a team of over 20 engineers to attend. In two days, the team used rope access, scaffold, drones and boats to enable the railway to reopen safely, in time for the Santa Express!

Garys determination was an inspiration to us all – and shows what can be achieved when people pool their skills and resources and work together.

This was a great collaboration between two companies and one that should be recognised.“
