Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Matthew Workman

Said the following about Loversall Lane Incident Team:

“Following a SPAD by a GB Railfreight train at Loversall Lane, Doncaster, a GB Railfreight train crashed into the back of a Freightliner train waiting at the signal ahead.

Over the following three weeks, the nominated team worked tirelessly in hot and difficult conditions in a very difficult site (no proper access, at the side of a site of special scientific interest) to help restore the railway, recover our assets and protect the environment. They worked as part of a multidisciplinary team, with Network Rail and their appointed contractors, to formulate, evolve and execute the recovery plan. This required long periods onsite, lodging away from home and working through nights and weekends to manage the transportation of recovery equipment and damaged rolling stock. The team provided expertise in operational process, planning and engineering disciplines, and demonstrated flexibility, innovation and excellent collaboration skills to safety recover a very complex situation.

This is probably the most serious and complex incident that any of the team have been involved with, but they demonstrated a high level of competence, and great non-technical skills in a very difficult situation.“
