Said the following about Graham Marris:

“Graham Marris started his railway career on 19th August 1974 – over 48 years ago!

He started as a bricklayer at the tender age of 16, and is now a highly regarded Tunnel Engineer who is taking time to mentor the next generation of Engineers.

In 1992 Graham became a Structures Examiner, where he examined a wide variety of structures, in 2003 he was promoted to Lead Structures Examiner where his role involved undertaking tunnel examinations….the source of Graham’s main passion!

Graham was for many years a ‘LNE’ man – and is known and highly regarded in the Route by anyone involved in Tunnel Examinations – having examined every single one! In 2019 he began examining tunnels in Wales Route and is not far off completing them all!

Graham’s knowledge of structures, amassed over nearly half a century, is second to none and I am honoured to have had the pleasure of working alongside him – he has taught me a lot!

I have nominated Graham for this award for his commitment and dedication to railway structure examinations, and also for his generosity in wanting to share his knowledge with the next generation. Graham goes out of his way to train, mentor and support other examiners and engineers and has had a huge impact on our industry.“

Dan Lewis

Said the following about Graham Marris:

“Although I speak from a personal perspective, I know there will be many (many) people who can relate to and echo my sentiments.

Graham has been with me throughout my relatively short (in comparison to his 48 year stint) time on the railway, mentoring me throughout various stages of my structural examining/engineering career.

His extent of knowledge in all things tunnel, and his method of mentoring is unrivalled. Nothing phases him. He's sixty 'chuffin' (Marris, 2020) something years old and still as fit as fiddle.

You turn up to a site with him and everyone knows him, and people seem comfortably reassured and safe in the knowledge that it's Graham on the job. An earned and deserved accolade in itself!

Graham is nearing the end of his 'boots on ballast' time as he's earned his well-deserved retirement. It's no coincidence that I volunteer to get myself on the same shifts as him as frequently as possible, learning all I can from him while I still can.“
