Said the following about David Godley:

“I have known David Godley since joining Network Rail in 2012 and feel compelled to nominate him for a Lifetime Achievement Award. David joined the railways in 1978 and retired this September 2022 after 44 years of dedicated service.

Anyone who knows David will immediately recognise that he is a fountain of railway knowledge. Knowledge that he gained from senior roles such as Head of Track; Chief Track & Lineside Engineer; Head of Engineering Capability at Network Rail; Docklands Light Railway; Tube Lines; Regional Head of Infrastructure Engineer and Interim Director for Safety, health and Environment at North West and Central region.

In these roles, David impacted 100s of people in a positive way, from graduates and young people to experienced engineers and non-engineers. He has supported the career and development of so many and is a fantastic role model for the next generation of railway workforce. David is passionate about railway competence and capability, and ensuring people understood what it means to deliver a safe railway. He worked tirelessly to define, implement and verify engineering competence across the whole of Network Rail

David was not afraid to beat this drum to the highest post to ensure it gets due attention.

David is genuinely a caring person who takes time outside of work to visit colleagues who are going through difficult times. In 2021, David supported the STEM and Railway Benefit Fund by cycling 1,858 miles. He has mentored and supported the development of a diverse workforce in Network Rail.

These are just my impressions of David in the short time that I have worked with him. It will be a delight for him to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution and services to the railways.“
