The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Leon Gilchrist

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“I would like to nominate Ben for Rail Engineer of the year award

Ben joined Amey consulting as a Designer Engineer having previously been a Railway Telecoms site engineer.

Over the last 2 years Ben has progress from a Design Engineer to a Senior Design Engineer whilst also studying and completing his HNC and HND in which he has received distinctions.

Ben is an integral part of the Telecoms design team and shows great enthusiasm with no task to small. He has produced multiply complex telecoms designs on large projects that include Wales and Boarders and Midland Main Line upgrades. He has produced detailed survey scope documents that have been commended by the client along with presenting to multiple audiences including the client and stake holders.

His "can do" attitude reverberates around the team, whist he also studies in his spare time to complete his BSc (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree. I cannot commend him enough.“

Hywel James

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“Ben is a very knowledgeable engineer who has been working on both the Wales & Borders and the Midlands Main Line projects. No task is too big or small for Ben, who takes great pride in ensuring his designs are produced to a very high standard.

Ben previously worked as a Railway Telecoms Site Engineer and as such, has completed multiple on site surveys for the Wales & Borders project as well as producing a detailed survey scope for the MML project.

Ben has achieved his HNC+ qualification with an overall distinction grade and is about to undertake his "top-up" degree course; which will allow him to achieve a BSc (Hons) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

Ben is a very valuable member of the telecoms team and a pleasure to work with. He's a great mentor to myself and other younger members of the team.“

Suhanya Saenthan

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“Ben took over the designer role in Wales and Borders and Midland Mainline projects. I was working with Ben in both of these projects, and he has been doing a fantastic job since day one. He has evidenced his technical skills and site knowledge by producing various high-quality designs from preliminary designs to detailed designs, producing detailed survey specifications and carrying out surveys very efficiently. His designs also recommended innovative solutions, which provides cost effective benefits to the projects.

He always shows a can-do attitude and is very flexible and always willing to stay longer if required to deliver a design. His ability to work in MicroStation is an added benefit to the team. Ben also performed checker role for number of designs, in which he carried out a detailed check of the design and helped to deliver high quality designs. He is successfully progressing his academic qualifications along with his job. He previously gained his EngTech qualification with the IET, since he joined Amey, and also currently making a good progress with his Incorporated Engineer (IEng) application.

He is willing to share his knowledge with the team and provides mentorship to the junior members of the team. He is a valuable member of the Amey Telecoms team and a great asset for the industry. I highly recommend Ben to nominate for the Rail engineer award category.“

Dave Standen

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“Having the pleasure of working with Ben, he is both conscientious and a thorough engineer. Ensuring every detail is covered. He’ll use his initiative to actively seek out answers to technical issues and or scope clarifications where scope is ill defined or open to interpretation. In view to managing expectations, ensuring the compatibility and adherence in multidiscipline designs.

Bens, innovation in design is excellent, whilst recognising the client’s requirements his application of approved products and cognisance of cost, carbon footprint and future ongoing maintenance. In his work on Wales & Borders and Midland Mainline as an example.

The impact of Ben’s work will be seen for at least a generation in the Welsh valley’s and I would hope his best practice, enthusiasm and professionalism will be propagated throughout the industry.“

Manish Harji

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“I’ve worked with Ben for over 4 years on the CVL Wales & Borders project.

Ben has a comprehensive knowledge of the railway systems, by using his on-site experience and implementing it into his design work.

Ben demonstrates excellent technical engineering ability allied with strong communication and time management skills.“

Philip Owen

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“I originally interviewed Ben when he first joined the railway as a trainee telecom engineer.

We quickly realised that we had an outstanding engineer who had an appetite to get involved in every facet of telecom engineering. He self-motivated to attend evening engineering classes, as well as reviewing every project we undertook, so he could develop his knowledge.

He progressed into Telecom construction, Project Engineering, Design, Testing and commissioning as well as safety management. He now has an in-depth knowledge and experience of projects in Rail telecoms.

When Ben moved to Amey Consulting, I had the pleasure of again working with him, when he was the telecoms design engineer for the operational telecoms scope for the Transport for Wales core valley lines project. He has used his knowledge/experience to produce an excellent level of design, with an eye for detail.

Despite Ben not starting his working life in telecom engineering or having a degree, he has quickly developed into an exceptional engineer, who is still striving to increase his qualifications, experience, and knowledge.

I have no hesitation in recommending him.“

Kelvin Knight

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“I have known Ben for nearly 4 years, whilst working on the Wales & Border Project, I find him to be very knowledgeable regarding the operational telecoms and has helped myself out, on more than one occasion with information and scheme details, nothing is too much trouble for him, and if he does not know the answer he will always try and find out.“

Alick McLeod

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“In my role as Amey Rail Consulting's Technical Director for Telecoms, it is a real pleasure for me to nominate Ben Cleary for the Rail Engineer of the Year award. I recall interviewing Ben and, at the time, there was no-doubt in my mind he would continue to develop as young and highly capable Telecoms design engineer as is now evident.

As a relatively young person, Ben as demonstrated maturity beyond his years with an attitude to 'get things done' in a safe and highly professional manner. In rather odd circumstances, I have witnessed Ben taking a commendable initiative whilst lineside surveying and realising a dog was somewhere it shouldn't have been (i.e. lineside!) and managed to catch the dog and take it the nearest Police station. The dog and it's gratefully and delighted owner were reunited thanks to Ben.

I recall Ben's approach to innovation whilst surveying by using a mobile tel. app to define the exact grid referenced location of Telecom assets. Whilst the mobile tel. app was recognised as a potential tool to support surveying, Ben was the first to practise its use lineside.

I think of Ben's positive impact on project delivery and maturity in confidently talking through his designs in what can be daunting IDC/R meetings taking queries in his stride - not easy! This impressive project impact was achieved whilst achieving distinctions in his day-release college work through Level 3 to Level 5 academic attainment with current study to Level 6 Degree level. I say impressive given, on a personal level, Ben became a dad through this timeframe.

Whilst recognising a strong field of candidates at all different levels, it is with absolute conviction I consider Ben Cleary as a worthy winner of the Engineer of the Year award. I say this given is relatively young age and that he's achieved in his career thus far.“

Said the following about Ben Cleary:

“I am very happy to nominate Ben Cleary for the Rail Engineer of the Year award.

Although Ben has progressed massively since I worked with him, I always found him to be inquisitive and pro-active in the delivery of projects. As CRE to Ben as a designer he always sought to understand the system and engineering principles behind it, be it Remote Condition Monitoring or surveying of signalling assets using GPS. He is a confident and effective communicator and leader in track safety. Resourceful and client focussed he ensured that the delivery of any project was successful and showed no hesitance in exploring new fields within the railway environment.

I know he has bolstered his extensive engineering skills with academic qualifications in the intervening years making him a truly worthy candidate for this award.“
