Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Matthew Newell

Said the following about Alex Reed:

“Myself and the rest of A-Shift would like to nominate Alex Reed for Rail Manager of the year.

Since Alex became our duty engineering manager, he has given our shift a massive uplift in morale and productivity. He has driven each member of our shift to become better, more competent in our roles and feel like we each are playing an important part in the running of both our light rail systems - TTS and POD. He has introduced team briefings to keep us updated on any information we need and also weekly lookaheads so at the start of our working week we can see everything we should be expected to achieve or works to be completed. And even arranging our xmas meal!

A-Shift were the first and remain the only shift in the rail department where every member of our staff has completed each competency assessment required for them which helps the shift run a lot more smoothly and fairly distributes the work leading to a happier working environment.

Whilst managing our shift, in his own time Alex has also completed his NEBOSH qualification and is undertaking a level 5 management NVQ. He also has encouraged additional learning within the team, supporting 3 individuals to pass the ‘Assessing in the workplace’ level 3 NVQ and another with his NVQ level 3 apprenticeship portfolio.

Alex was also a driving force and took the lead in the remobilising of our POD system following closure due to covid. A lot of staff thought that the POD system would never open again but his drive to push higher management to open, to test the vehicles, shovelling snow, coming in on his days off and have the system ready for passengers within a months’ notice was a leading example.

Other than his management duties, Alex goes above and beyond giving tours and presentations to visitors of Heathrow’s Rail department. These including local schools, airports from China and Dubai, local councils and MPs including baroness Lizz Sugg. Alex also carries interviews and assessment days for future apprentices of Heathrow and lately produced a presentation and talked to over 3000 14-18 year olds about the benefits and rewards of working within Heathrow Rail.“
