Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Richard Cooper

Said the following about Simon Hatch:

“Simon joined Bridgeway in 2013 in the role of BIM Manager after 14 years experience within the Architectural field, working for companies such as Miller Homes and David Wilson Homes. His appointment at Bridgeway underlined the commitment of the company to embrace new ideas and processes, and Simon has been integral in the formation and development of the BIM and CAD team.

With a background in creating and interrogating 3D models, Simon quickly settled into the Geomatics Team and has tirelessly promoted the benefits which can be gained from the adoption of BIM (Building Information Modelling) principles. He has worked with industry and academia alike, liaising with representatives from Network Rail, High Speed Two, and Nottingham University amongst others and also sitting within wider industry groups to help to shape the way that the rail industry adopts BIM and all that it has to offer. Additionally Simon has undertaken a mentor role, guiding both his staff and clients through the key principles and some of the finer detail of 3D modelling alongside cascading his knowledge of relevant and emerging industry standards and practices.

This work is backed up by an excellent track record of overseeing the production of 3D models for clients such as Mott MacDonald, North Midland Construction and Network Rail. With models primarily created from pointcloud survey data gathered by Bridgeway’s survey teams, Simon’s team has closed the loop in terms of data collection and the production of a final deliverable. Key projects have included the production of models of London Liverpool Street Station, Euston Station, White Hart Lane and Scarborough Bridge in York – the latter being nominated for the Autodesk Excellence in Infrastructure award.

The key to Simon’s success though is the understanding of what can be achieved with a BIM model once it has been produced. He has advised upon their use for design co-ordination, clash detection, demolition phasing, lighting and pedestrian flow analysis among many other functions, and is always happy to spend time with his clients to ensure that a full understanding is reached by all parties. Currently Simon is currently looking at the representation of Ground Investigation and Utilities data within 3D models, and continues to develop Bridgeway’s BIM capability.

It gives me great pleasure to nominate Simon as Rail Manager of the Year in recognition of his position as a true innovator and one of the key people who is set to push the BIM agenda within the rail environment.“
