“In support of Bob Forsyth nomination of Rail Engineer of the Year for Shaziya Patel, Shaziya has also demonstrated great leadership qualities through the following behaviours and competencies.

Communication: An aspect of good communication is recognition of individuals, by recognising the people who you work with, Shaziya will always say good morning to everyone so she can get to know people better, by communicating effectively with the wider team is a crucial role in her success.

Organisation: Shaziya is good at time management, prioritising, planning and pays extreme attention-to-detail.

Problem Solving: What separates good leaders from great leaders is how they respond to problems, Shaziya is an effective problem-solver as she is extremely analytical in her thinking which is often supported by her creativity nature.

Coaching & Mentoring: Shaziya possesses skills that allow her to coach and mentor individuals, she does this through her motivational qualities, team building, and adaptability and organisation skills. Shaziya in the past has attended many STEM organised events to help promote women in engineering in particular the rail industry.

Delegation: Delegation is much more complex than just giving instructions, It’s about identifying what you want to achieve from tasks by allocating tasks in line with team member’s strengths and weaknesses, Shaziya has been and will be successful at delegation, as she possess qualities in the proficiency of planning, organising and scheduling tasks with realistic timescales.

Relationship Building: Building and maintaining strong relationships is an important aspect of leadership as leaders are judged on the results that team members deliver. As such, leader’s relationships with team members have a big impact on how they perform, Shaziya is a good active listener, she praises individuals when appropriate, she’s extremely good at understanding colleague’s emotions, which enables her to develop a culture of togetherness.

Motivation: Motivation is arguably the most important leadership skill as It enables colleagues to achieve their goals, which can translate into achieving organisation goals. Understanding team members on an individual basis is one of the keys to motivation and Shaziya is able to promote team building through getting to know individuals.

Adaptability: One of the keys to Shaziya’s success is her ability to continuously adapt to an ever-changing environment.“

“Shaziya has shown an exceptional performance in developing and producing the GB Safer isolation procedures across the new electrification projects in Anglia including Gospel Oak - Barking (GOB-E) and West Anglia route Modernisation (WARM) electrification projects. Her efforts included detailed consultation with NR HQ & IP senior engineers, development of the GB SIP process and design / implementation and delivery of the training package for ECRO / Maintenance / OPS and contractors. Despite continual opposition from several sectors, she persevered and successfully achieved full implementation of the GB-SIP process and system to meet project milestones and gain authorisation from the ORR to allow passenger services to run. An outstanding achievement. Shaziya was also recently awarded CEng status by the IMechE and promoted to EPME Romford following her success as a Project Manager E&P.“
