The RailStaff Awards 2024

Colin Kelly

Said the following about ISS Labour Training Division:

“I would like to nominate ISS Labour Rail Training Division for Training Team of the Year in the 2016 Rail Staff Awards. This team is based out of our recently opened, state-of-the art indoor training centre in Salford. These facilities provide a great environment for learning, but the real strength of the ISS Labour Training Division is its people, both in terms of the trainers and the back office support.

Combined, our training manager and trainers have over 80 years’ relevant industry experience between them. Our trainees benefit directly from this experience and from the accessible, friendly way in which sometimes complex information is shared – across a range of NSAR approved courses. Care is also taken to draw upon the experience of the trainees in the room, helping to ensure that students are fully engaged with the subject.

Meanwhile, our back office team works extremely hard to ensure that our customers receive first class training and support. They provide the administrative support and organisational expertise to allow our trainers to do what they do best – training. This team also works on promoting the good name of ISS Labour to potential future customers and the local area.

As an example of this, they have engaged with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. The extensive electrification programme in the north of England has created a need for the fire service to understand the basics of electric railway power systems and to fully understand the emergency switch-off protocol, in the event of an accident. Recognising this, the ISS Labour Rail Training team has held several courses in a series of pro bono training sessions for the emergency services. Following the success of this initiative, we have now offered to extend this to other Fire and Rescue Services in the North West.

Brian Madden

Said the following about ISS Labour Training Division:

“It's been a pleasure to watch the development and expansion of the ISS Labour Training team. The breadth and depth of technical knowledge displayed is second-to-none, but crucially the skilful way the trainers help even the most recalcitrant of trainees to display their understanding is a lesson in itself.

Complex issues and technical concepts are broken down to simple examples drawn from the trainees’ own experience, then reassembled to highlight key issues or points to remember. The time taken by the team to get to know their students helps maximise the learning and development for the individual.

With the support of the Training Manager and staff, both Railway individual and commercial client find their needs are uppermost in the planning and development of the courses offered, and with the modern ISS Labour Training School the emphasis is on a comfortable and pleasant learning environment.
