The RailStaff Awards 2024

Jonathan Glass

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“It was a real pleasure to be involved in the team and to get toiletries and every day essentials to the people who needed it most at this difficult time.

We had colleagues across the west of Scotland who ended up being involved, and in addition to staff donations, we also built relationships with the local community, local charities and local business in order to secure extra donations.

The team did a fantastic job, and did this all in addition to their own day jobs which themselves were pivotal in order to keep key workers moving.“

Sophie Nightingale

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“Hospitals across the West of Scotland benefited from donations from ScotRail staff, co-ordinated by Susan Temple at Johnstone station.

The team of volunteers arranged safe collection and delivery of toiletries and food and drink supplies for staff and patients at a number of hospitals including; Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Princess Royal Maternity, Royal Alexandra, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, University Hospital Crosshouse, University Hospital Ayr, and the Gartnavel and Beatson Oncology Centre.

Susan was initially approached by the Lord Provost of Renfrewshire, asking for donations of biscuits for the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Thinking that if one hospital was struggling for supplies, there were likely problems at other hospitals.

Starting with a collection for Inverclyde Royal, a call was put out to staff. As the donations poured in, colleagues began to ask if there was more they could do and all of a sudden each hospital had a team directing donations, coordinating with hospital staff to ensure they were requesting items that the hospital desperately needed. 15 members of staff coordinated collections for hospitals across the West Coast. Our amazing covid heroes included: Steven Bradley, Marie-Louise Fox, Jonathan Glass, Ryan Fergusson, Nicola Frew, Janice Povah, Claire Murray, Morag Stewart, James Doherty, Ricky Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Garrett Ramsay, Jim McCulloch and Roy Anderson.

Over a period of 3 months our colleagues gave their spare time to ensure that the much-needed donations made it safe to the hospitals.“

Susan Temple

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“This team came together because of the need of others. We covered a large area of Strathclyde, and because of the placement of the hospitals, and the railway, having colleagues willing to help made perfect sense. Colleagues from train care, station staff, on train staff, tvm supervisor, train planning, even a Station team manager.

These colleagues are placed all over the network and each of them looked after their local hospital. Sourcing items that were needed at each hospital was a challenge. But was achieved? They were amazing. This team showed what can be achieved when we pull together, and because we are in industry that reaching every inch of the UK.“

Margaret Macfarlane

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“The Hospital Heroes project is something that really captured the imagination of all of us and encouraged all of us locally to contribute after the project was covered in our local paper, the Greenock Telegraph.

The team did a fantastic job at keeping patients spirits up when people couldn't visit them. It was such a difficult time for everyone, and knowing that these rail workers did this when they had such a difficult job to do themselves is amazing to see.

I hope the team are recognised for the hard work that they have done.“

Daniel McWilliams

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“A fantastic team from across the railway in Scotland who did a fantastic job at collecting toiletries, food and goodies for patients at hospitals across the Glasgow area. Great that so many people from so many different jobs in the company got involved.

Well done everyone!“

Heather Bell

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“Jonathan and the team of hospital heroes were truly fantastic. They made such a huge difference at a time when little was known about Covid, and nobody really knew the risks associated with it or how badly people would be affected if they needed hospital treatment.

Jonathan did this when he was working extra hours in his own role in Train Planning in order to keep key workers moving. Others also had to put in extra hours who did this role, doing enhanced cleaning regimes at stations for example. This meant that they had very little free time to do other things, so the fact they all dedicated it to this amazing cause was fantastic.“

Ryan Fergusson

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“Great to have been a part of the team that did this. As well as the team who are nominated a lot of local staff also helped us and donated generously. This award, if we won, would be for all of the ScotRail frontline heroes who played their part during the pandemic.“

John Gorman

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“I am a regular customer at Johnstone and I know how kind hearted the staff there are, they do a lot of hard work supporting the community, and this was never more so than when they joined forces with colleagues across the west of Scotland to collect toiletries and gifts for patients in hospitals. I still had to use the station every day during the pandemic and I was blown away at their efforts. Reading about it in the local press blew me away.“

Richard Campbell

Said the following about Hospital Heroes:

“This team in there own time during Covid collected various items at different rail depots and shops and through there dedication donated all the collected items to various hospitals throughout different areas using there own transport to deliver essential stuff to vulnerable hospital patients who at times had no family or friends.“
