“I have been lucky enough to know Chandra for nearly the 20 years he has worked on the metro service as used to be known as under First Great Eastern
When we first met Chandra was part of the area station cleaning team
Over his career he has progressed to the platform at Gidea Park and when you mention the station the first thing people mention is this amazing human being
I have yet to meet a nicer railway person and would travel a very long way to be by his side if he was in need of any help hope he doesn’t mind me sharing a personal story with everyone
A few years ago Chandra was taken to a local hospital in Chelmsford which is nearest to his home to discover he had a hereditary heart condition that if not treated would sadly mean we could lose this inspiring man. He was transferred to a hospital in nearby Basildon so a specialist surgeon could perform the surgery that would mean we could keep this man among us. I’m sure anyone who has had a family member in a hospital that all you want to do is spend the whole of visiting time keeping them positive during this heart rending time
His family had a problem I’ve not heard of before as colleagues of his, working for Greater Anglia at the time, formed an orderly que just so they could see Chandra and wish him a quick recovery
In the ques were cleaner, platform staff, drivers and even managers stood patiently waiting for their chance to let him know he was being prayed for and thought of all times of the day or night. Nobody hogged his attention and I know his family limited their own visiting so everyone possible got a chance to wish him well
So he is not just a special railway person but is truly surrounded by amazing family
Throughout his time on the railway he has passed his knowledge onto anyone who spent time and listen to his advice on how to do the job to the best of their ability“
