Nominations for Train Driver of the Year

Martin Brown

Said the following about Bianca Rennie:

“I would like to recognise the following young lady for her efforts to support Paul McCann's fellow driver who passed away after running the great Eastern run in Peterborough. Bianca to it upon herself to set up a crowd fund page up in order of Paul. Bianca wanted to raise enough money for the drivers on the GM could buy some flowers for Paul's funeral and also get something nice for Paul's two young children.

Bianca set a target of £200 and within hours over £1000 had been raised, this package then became an opportunity for people to post obituaries on the page which I knew was serving as a comfort to Mick Paul's dad and his brothers and wife and kids. As time went on this page and the funds rose and finally reached £9440 and 20p from 409 supporters this money was then transferred over to the family to use for Paul's funeral costs.

As many people knew it is with great sadness that we lost a fellow driver and too many a friend yesterday. Paul McCann was running the great Eastern run, half marathon in Peterborough yesterday and had a major heart attack about a mile away from the finish line.

I'm sure all of us can agree this man was a wonderful human being and just an all round nice guy who will be so badly missed and getting that he was also so close to taking his part C which I knew he'd worked so hard for.

I'm going to get a card for people to sign and will be setting up a little collection and I'll leave it in King's Cross SOP tonight. I was with his wife and kids last night I knew all your kind messages were very much needed so thank you all for that really wonderful when we all come together when something tragic happens.

It's great that fellow drivers and other GN employees had a location that they could donate or share kind words about Paul. Reason for my nomination is that the driver community did so well to help Paul and his family in the tragic time it wasn't just about the money it was also an opportunity for employees to post kind words. It gave the family the opportunity to know how loved and respected Paul was.

My reason for nominating Bianca Rennie is her warm heart and kindness for thinking of others through the good times and the bad in times like these it is a rarity to find someone as special and is caring as Bianca bringing people together at a time of need and I believe we would all agree that such a unselfish deed should not go unnoticed.“
